Noise Upfront

I have a 2001 alero that has been making a load noise up from that seems to be generating from the wheel area. The faster the car goes the loader the noise. I thought that maybe the brakes where rubbing so II turned the roters but I still have the same noise. I was think that maybe the wheel bearings are going bad but I am not sure.


Anyone have any suggestions

You have the wheel bearing issue. Does the noise increase at 20MPH? If so that's most likely the problem. After the dealership replaced the right front hub assembly on my car, it quieted down quite a bit.

It gets loader the faster I go. the noise caps out around 55 miles per hour. When I did the breaks, the bearings did not seem to have any play though.

What you're describing is exactly what other people have complained about before they have their hub assembly replaced. Have you recently had any ABS, Trac off or Service Vehicle Soon lights come on? That's what my clue was...and some noise. Read through some of the other topics on this thread and you'll see that they experienced the same thing.

Can you do this repair yourself? Others who paid for this at the stealership took a big hit in the pocket book. Find a good independent if you can't fix her yourself.

I have a v6. My question is can you just replace the bearings or do you have to buy the whole assembly.

You need to replace the entire hub assmbly. Sorry.

Would this cause a "thumping" when the brakes are applied also?

No, the thumping is warped rotors.

Yeah, well that's what I thought, too. I got new front rotors and brake pads, and the thumping continues. My mechanic said he checked out the rear rotors/brakes and they were fine. I'm taking it back in today, so who knows...
