Keyless Entry Question '96 A4

I just bought a '96 A4 Quattro with leather seats, sunroof and cold-weather pkg. I was told it had keyless entry but the remotes were lost. Any way of checking this out quickly? If it is there, do I need to go with the Audi remote or can other types be programmed to work with this system?
