Leak from oil pan! Help!

somebody please help me! so yesterday i went to go and get my car (93 rx7 stock) emission tested since i needed to renew it soon. however i failed the test and they said i had a leak coming from my oil pan. i dont know what it is and i dont know how to fix it. can somebody please tell me any and all possibilties of what is causing this leak from my oil pan and the severity of all scenarios. please respond! please! i want to get my car fixed but i need to have a general idea of how much it is going to cost me first. also, please dont post here if you are just going to criticize me for sounding childish or not know what i am doing with such a great car. thanks.

I don't know much about third gen's, but I think the following would apply:

You need to find out how bad the leak is. Jack the car up and inspect the pan area. Is it dented or have any visible signs of a leak? If the pan is dented- you'll need to take it off and make sure it isn't warped. If you can see it ruptured (very rare) you need a new one.

If the pan is ok- Clean the oil pan and surrounding areas with some purple power castrol or simple green (don't get purple power on painted surfaces). Start the car, run it for a while (like all day or a few days) and get back under it. Find out where it is leaking and how bad. If it is just seeping between the block and the pan do the simple fix. Get a Mazda oil pan gasket and find the tourqe and bolt sequence specs and replace it yourself. Not hard to do. Just make sure you drain the oil entirely, scrape off any old gasket material on the block and your pan. I don't use gasket sealer on oil pan gaskets but some folks may differ. Also- inspect your pan for any warps or checks at this time. I simpy run a metal straight edge across and sideways and visually look for any 'light'. If no warps you're fine. Any warps- you need to get a new oil pan.

If you clean the oil pan and surrounding areas and notice oil coming from someplace other than the pan, I would take it to a shop and have them inspect it. Or- log on to the RX7club.com and go to the third gen section- they can prob help you out more.

i knew about just resealing the oil pan and what not, thats easy. but is there a strong liklihood its anything more than just an oil pan seal pop and something coming from the rotors or something like that. i am just afraid the damage is really bad, thus connecting to the reason why i failed emissions. and i really think i might just get rid of it even though it is a great car if it requires significant repairing. the leak isnt terrible by the way. but if anyone knows how bad or how likely it is, that this leak is worse than just a simple broken seal, please respond. i am refreshing the page every two minutes hoping for some more responses. i hate to see my baby hurt. thanks guys. later

if the leak is coming from your oil pan then chances or it just needs a new gasket. even a bad gasket can have a bad leak.

my opinion is to just chill out and get under there, clean it up, drive around for awhile then check again and hopefully find the area that it seems to be coming from then make plans from there

I din't know oil leak had anything to do with emi.

The two issues are more than likely unrelated. If your 'burning' oil it would not evidence itself as a leak in under the oil pan.

This is very common on rotary engines, the fix is simple.
You have to remove the sump pan and DO NOT use a gasket, it will leak again, even if you use a factory gasket.
You need to apply permatex grey sealant or something very similar to the pan, DO NOT use hylomar.
This needs to be applied inboard of the bolt holes,make sure the pan is meticulously clean before you apply it.
Give it in to a reputable shop to do the work if you don't think you can do it yourself as the pan can be damaged easily whilst removing.It is flimsy on the mating face.
