Since nobody posts in the Datsun 510 forum.. is is possible to install at SR20 motor in a Datsun 510? What is the maximum HP that you can produce on the SR20? What year(s) is smog exempt? :slap:

Yes it will fit, in fact it's a pretty comon swap. I believe McKinney will modify arts for you to help with the installation. If you have money, it's hard to put a limit on how much horsepower you can get from it, but stock you can get around 220-230 whp by upping the boost. I think the SR will pass the actual emissions test, but will fail visual inspection.

I seen a VG in there as well, not the VG30DETT but a SOHC one.
rwd SR's are not legal in USA, in any state or any form of street useage
they can be made to pass emissions but you will hurt performance, so whats the point.
I see a lot of people swapping in KA24DE's into 510's lately, which is a good idea, and you can still turbo it to beat the shit out of a SR20(which isn't hard).

Cars 30yrs or older are on a rolling exemption from smog testing. At least in California. That's why a lot of Datsuns.. 510, 280z, etc.. are getting popular for all that crazy engine work. True, the SR is not a legal engine, but if you're not required to get tested, why not? :)

So it's ok for me to drive with an SR motor? Why are SR motors illegal anyway??? U see 240SX with it??? True.....im not required to get tested for smog :1:

correct me if I'm wrong but I think the reason that the SR20DET is illegal in the US is because it never made it here or was sold here in the US. If it had been in a car that was sold in the US it would be legal. A fwd SR is found in here though so a fwd version would be legal, but not practical in a 240.
so depending on if you get smog tested or not and if there is a visual test involved, determines whether or not you pass, or if you have an old car in Cali...

yup hes right, even if you don't have to pass emissions if you get inspected by a cop and he sees a nice brand new shiny turbo beast in a 1970's car hes going to get skeptical, we all know what 4 cylinders looked like back then haha.
since the rwd SR20DETurbo was never in a car that came to states it is not a legal engine. FWD SR20DETurbo's are not even legal technically, since they are a different engine then the 200sx/SER SR20DE
