I can count the number of times I've raced my Maxima on one hand in the years that I've owned her. I don't do it because it's a waste of gas, dangerous, and is unnecessarily hard on the car. However, this weekend, was a different story. I was in my Maxima with three other people and a loaded trunk because we were on our way to my best friend's (the groom) wedding. The groom's brother is following in his 2001 (?) V6 Cougar and has always been proud of how his car performs and has given my car a cursory nod every now and again. I think he understands the Maxima isn't a slouch but at the same time, he underestimates it as many people do.
I'm in the right hand land of a deserted (no one ahead or behind us otherwise I wouldn't have done this) divided highway (two lanes in each direction with a large, grassy median) and doing about 72mph. He's in the left and I see him floor it, trying to pull a fly-by. He's got some weight in the car (two passengers, no luggage). I let his front bumper get to my rear bumper and floor it. His fly-by is immediately stopped as my car roars to life, exhaust note drowning out all else and I pull away from him. I watch my tach as it redlines third and shifts super hard (thank you DR mod). I pull and pull to 105mph and take my foot off the gas. After we stopped at the groom's house we talked and apparently, he was trying to catch up the entire time yet couldn't catch me; guess those mods do a little something after all. :)
