If I have 2 laptops with wireless network cards, can I plug one of them into our wired network and get it to feed data to the other one with the wireless card?

Yes, if you have XP go to network conections where you can see both networks cards, select both of them as you would select two files, then right click them and select bridge conections.
This will make the laptop conected to the wired lan into a router and the other laptop will be able to access the wired network trought it.
