easy horse power help

ok guys. I am a college student on a budget. By my sn you know what truck i have. i wanted to do the intake and exhaust bit to save gas a nd boost hp. are there any better alternatives? More than anything I would like to boost gas mileage and horsepower kind of cheap, but nothing that would sacrifice my engine, something clean looking and safe. i have an idea for you, go out and buy this months sport truck magazine, its an s10 special, it has a 3 page article about how the 2.2l engine is weak and how you can boost up horse power. youll find your answer there, but im not sure how cheap the products are and what exactly cheap is to you.
