Hello All,
I posted earlier about the sputtering problem I have on my 1994 Jetta GL. I have replaced the cap, rotor, and plugs. Wires were replaced about 3 months ago, and I don't drive the car that often due to the nice weather and I own a motorcycle. I did the spray bottle test to see and I got no arching from the wires or the ignition coil. I tried retrieving the engine codes by shorting pins 4 and 15 with a jumper wire, but no codes popped up. I shorted them for approximately 3 seconds, and the CEL went off and never flashed codes. Is there a step I'm missing? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Was the CEL on to suggest there may be codes? Did you have the ignition on before jumpering the wires? When does it sputter, all the time, under load, idling...?

No the CEL was not on. I thought I could retrieve them anyway. I guess I misunderstood. It sputters @ low rpm's. Idle is rough, and acceleration is rough also. Once I get above 2000 rpm's, it smoothes out, unless I mash on the accelerator. Then it bogs down. I have replaced the fuel filter about 6 months ago, so it should be good. I also just cleaned up the MAF sensor, hoping that would help resolve the problem. Any other suggestions? I just replaced the plugs with Bosch Platinums, but I have read on other posts that NGK's are the way to go. Any suggestions?

Those plugs are fine. Unfortunately I suspect the MAF, but you should let someone with a VAG-COM look at it if you want to be sure.
