the t means touring, for all hatchbacks and wagons. the i means injected like most other bimmers. . .

the 3 series ti was made for a couple of years in the late 90's and looked like an honda CRX...it is best forgotten.

What you were looking at was a 318ti. 95 thru 97. basically exactly the same as the e36 318, up to the B-pillar, then a hatch back.

Every 8 or so years the germans decide they want to hook new loyalists in the US and they bring over a "cheaper" entry level car and run it for a few years. Mercedes is currently doing this with the C230 and C320. BMW might be doing it again soon with the 1 series. Interestingly, BMW and Mercedes seem to alternate when they do this. Audi does it too, but their calendar is a little messed up.

The 318ti is a cool lil car, you can get them really cheap now and a potentially good platform for making a lil rocket, EXCEPT! to make the hatch back, shorten the car, and place the gas tank, they had to drop the independant rear and go for a solid axel. Boooooooo!

The "t" has been used over the years to indicate Touring on the hatch and wagons, but it also in europe I believe td was used for turbo diesel. "t" was also used in the late 60's on the 2002's. These were not hatches or wagons. "ti" meant hot, and "tii" meant really hot with the first injected motor.

And for the fans of really rare. In the mid 60's BMW made a 1600gt. here the gt meant a real "gt" of that era, fast back, rolled front fenders, looked like and competed with the Porshe 912. These were made because BMW bought Glas for their factory space and had to do something with the remaining Glas factory stock. Got one of these cuties sittin in my garage :smokin:
