Brake problem..

I've had the same problem with my rear brakes for a while now. There is no pattern that i have noticed to the problem, which makes it worse to pin point. Often, it seems as if my ABS kicks in, but only on the rear brakes..and it shouldn't even happen. For instance, if the brakes are working properly, and i have to apply the brake a little more than usual, everything is okay. When the brakes are acting up, if i had to apply the brake a little more than usual, the rear brakes start grabbing/thumping... and it sounds similar to when the ABS kicks in. Its a big safety issue because ive come close to rear ending cars, since instead of stopping when it should, it will plunge forward a little with each thump. I can always tell when my brakes are acting up, because it seems that when i apply them normally, they grab instantly, and the back gets weighted down. I've replaced the drums, and the pads themselves are good. Any ideas???
thanks.

i have a sililar problem on my 96. the springs that operate the shoes are probably weak and instead of applying constant pressure are locking up. id have to say get a brake kit with all the hard ware from the auto parts store and have them replaced.... maybe even look into having the drums turned..think napa will do them for a small fee.......good luck

If it's the ABS system you'll feel the brake release and reapply. If this is the case sounds like a bad sensor or something causing the sensor to read false. Otherwise the rear drums may need to be turned, they are notorious for going out of round.

i have the same problem with my brakes on my 94 grand am ill have to be really touchy with them or my rear brakes start grabbing real hard and couses them to just slide. it feels as if the front brakes dont want to work when that happens as well the car keeps rolling no matter how hard the brake is apllied..i just pump them or slowly push the brake down but its not good to think about it when ur slidding into anouther car..ive gotten my brake rotors turned pad switched even looked at by a mechnic and im still not sure. it may be a proportioning valve or something like that im surprised to see newer cars doing it as well
