On my 2002 1500 5.3 I installed an AFE air filter and removed the MAF screen. Why does the air intake hose have that big section down underneth, looks like a walrus snout? could I tape off that hole or shouldI buy a Airaid tube? I see you were talking about a silincer but mine is not something you can take off and plug up.

If you want to modify your air intake, I suggest that you look into K&N FIPK. They come with everything you need, eliminates ALL the guess work.

I agree with gtmud. I put an K&N FIPK on my 01 with the 5.3 and noticed immediate gain in hp at the wheels and combinded with removing the MAF screen, about 2 mpg better than stock.

I got one at Auto Zone today! It was cheaper than I thought, 189.99 and they gave me a 10% military discount on top of that! I was so excited that I made an appointment to have a Flowmaster 52 installed Friday. I guess I should start thinking about a 160deg thermostat and a Hypertech!!! How hard is the thermostat to change? ANy advice? Do you have to buy that Dexcool stuff from the delaer?

Even though its expensive, you want to put the Dexicool, back into your system. Dexicool has a differant chemical make up than the standard Prestone anti-freeze. If your just changing your T-stat, than you should need only a gallon, don't need to drain your entire Radiator, just below your top radiator hose. Look into the JET Chips too, I've heard good things.

I installed my K&N FIPK gen II yesterday and drove it for the first full day (80+ miles) today. I definitely sense an increase in throttle response and it seems to run high speeds (70 @ 2000rpm) at lower rpms. I now understand why the stock/factory box has the "muffler" on it. This thing really ROARS when you step on the gas peddle... it is so loud I though maybe I had a leak but can not find one anywhere. Is this common for the rest of you K&N folks out there?
Any real advantage to removing the MAF screen? Does it void any factory warranty (not that I have much left)?
Tommorow I have my Flowmaster 50 installed. Can't wait to hear the new sound!

LEts, hear about how the Flow master works with the K&N. I have a 91 4.3ltr and was thinking of getting a Flowmaster muffler on it. Oh, the "ROAR" is a standard thing, I have the GEN II on my 00'XJ and I hear that "ROAR" everytime I get into it. PErsonally, I like it, and the wife doesn't seem to mind it.POWER!!!!!!!!

All I did for my air intake (I have a 1997 K1500 Z71 with the 5.7 liter) was put on a replacement K&N airfilter and took the top off the airbox. And I also just put on a Flowmaster 40 Delta flow, this truck has soooooo much more power with this combo. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can get more power out of my engine without spending to much money?? It is a Vortec 5.7.
