Will I have to pull the head to install new cams, springs, and retainers on an H23a? Also, what tools will I need? Thanks for any help.

it would be a good idea... but then again if you have to ask what tools you need and if you have to pull the head then you do not need to be doing the job. thats just me though... you need to be able to find the proper resources... check out http://www.helmsinc.com and buy yourself a factory service manual. I did and i have definately gotten my moneys worth out of that book.

I have the helm's manual already and was just wondering if anyone had any different recommendations through experience, probably a stupid question since helm's is really good. Anyways though, about the head, I'm not going to do this if I'll have to pull the head, cause It would become too involved, more so than it already is. So you can do it either way I guess? Any common disadvantages to leaving the head on?

OK, well I really want to get some mechanical experience, and what better way than to also reap the power benefits by using your own car. I know it might be tuff, and I'm sure something will go wrong, but any other comments/suggestion? Thanks Phunyguy.

if i were you, i'd pull it, just b/c. you have the manual, and it's a very easy head to pull. it would be a good oportunity to learn, replace your head gasket, and make the job at hand a little easier. just make sure you have a torque wrench, so you don't put it back together too tight. then next time, when you put in new pistons, sleves, and rods, you'll know what you're doing :grinyes:

I'd pull it for the simple fact that you have never done this before its not that hard as long as you use a torque wrench and toque everything to spec u should vat and clean the whole head while u have it off too.
