Ok... so I am driving and If i have to downshift to slow down, there is a sound as if something is winding down... its hard to explain, it is seperate from the exhaust and is coming from the engine. Is this just because I need a new clutch? It is like something is spinning really fast and if i downshift the spinning is slowing down.
Also.. There is a rattling coming from the engine as well... but only if I am idling with the clutch up in nuetral. If i push the clutch in the rattling stops.

Yeah dude my car does that too. I think its my tranny or something. I would love to have a real answer to this question because its been puzzling me for a long time. I would almost like to be told it was just that my clutch is starting to get old.

i think that whining is just the gears slowing down inside the tranny

alot of times that sound is your syncro's
at least that what the winding sound was in my last honda, seems to be a normal problem
next time you change your tranny oil put some "syncromesh" or some lucas additive in there as well, it will quiet it down a little

I don't know about the winding down sound, but I'm pretty sure the rattle while in neutral is like stated above, the throw out bearing, might need a new one.

Agreed, but if you keep downshifting like that before you get a new clutch put in, you will waste your tranny. I did that even though when I did put the new clutch kit and flywheel in with new bearings and seals it only lasted 2k miles. It was, alas too late, and I had to get a whole new tranny.

ok IMO i think the rattling on idle is the Thrust bearing which you will get a new one when you change the clutch as they are included in the kit, and the "whining" will most likely be a gearbox whine due to mileage or just the noise of the gearbox, my VT has done 62k miles and it whines when i downshift at highish revs
