Strut bars, tie bars, etc. not struts. Strut is the "thing" your springs are mounted to. The lower rear tie goes between the rear lower control arms. You might have problems getting the bolts out due to the cars age, if that's the case then new control arm bolts & bushings will be needed. DO NOT use cheap hardware store bolts.

now are strut bars really necessary for a car's performance? i have no idea for what they are for, except maybe for drifts or something? can anyone explain?

strut bars help with handling. when taking a corner, the car usually leans to one side. the bars help keep the car level increasing stability. after putting them on i noticed a huge improvment, turns that would push me to one side hardly do anything now.

Upper strut bars provide bracing between the strut towers, preventing movement. Stiffer chassis = better handling. Lower ties do about the same. Upper/lower tie bars DO NOT control body roll, that's what sway bars do.
