i own a 98 jetta wolfsburg with a 2.0 engine and auto tranny. after buying it the tranny would not shift when it was supposed to, check engine came on and brought to autozone to read the codes. the code reader said speed sensor, ordered it, replaced it, and no fix, reread the codes said same thing, two codes: speed sensor, and not recieving signal from speed sensor. bought another sensor but this one was different, the first one was cylinder like that screwed on the back and the second one was held in with a star screw, both new same problem. does anybody know how many sensors there are????? or what the problem is, please respond, going crazy with going through twice as much gas. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

What codes did it read? If the codes were P0722 & P0723, it means that the sensor that goes into the tranny is not the problem but the vehicle speed sensor/cable/pig-tail that is present next (left/below when looking under the hood) to the battery(2-pin) has a problem. Most of the time, it is the cable which gets short. U may find it at a used parts place and the replacement procedure is very simple too. Good luck.
