Silverado vs. Tacoma

OK! I'll tell ya the truth. I bought a 99 silverado xtended cab z71. I've had it for 10,000 miles and have replaced rotors, catalitic converter, 4wd switch, broken speakers, broken ABS pump (costs $1200 for repair), and busted tailgate. It now has 61,000 on it.
I wanna git rid of this money sucking vortex and get somethin that works. Can anyone give me an honest opinion about the Tacoma? I'm leanin towards the 99 or 00 year. Thanks

3.4L V6 is a great engine. Never quits.

Truck is very reliable if you do the scheduled preventive maintenance. Timing belt is due at 90K. Don't buy one with 80K.

One of my best friends bought a Silverado flareside a year before I bought my Tacoma, and his Chevy was brand new. I bought my Tacoma a year old. My Tacoma is a '98 Limited. This truck never eats (or leaks) oil, and Ive never had any major problems with it. The biggest problem I've had were the rear axle seals, which the dealership fixed for free. I drove this truck to Las Vegas in 125° F heat and the temp never went over half and I ran the AC the whole way (kind of like driving through a blowdryer on high). The only thing that you might miss is the power, although for an extra $2500-$3000 you can have the Tacoma fitted with a supercharger that will take the stock V6 (190hp) to somewhere around 250hp.

I traded in my 98 Tacoma (Owned since new) on a new 2003 Z71 Ext. Cab last July, because I wanted a vehicle that could fit 4 people.
To make a long story short, I traded the Z71 for a new Honda Civic 10 months later. I had a lot of trouble with the Chevy (many of the same problems you listed)
What I wish I had done was to keep my 98 Tacoma for hauling stuff and driving to work and I could have bought the Honda Civic as a third vehicle for when I needed to transport more than myself and one passenger. It was a tight fit when I drove my two boys to school and my wife wouldn't drive it because she refuses to learn how to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission, but I really loved that truck. My first Toyota truck was an '89 model 4X4 with the 4 cylinder engine. Drove it for 13 years and only sold it because I was sick of driving the same vehicle. A friend runs a GMC dealership and gave me a great price on a 1999 Silverado LT with everything but 4X4. Absolutely the best riding, most storage place, and quietest truck I have ever experienced. But you know what? I sold it a few weeks ago and bought a prerunner double cab with the V6 and am quite happy. The silverado is a very nice truck. A tacoma will be a very reliable truck and might get 1 or 2 miles per gallon more. By the way, the ABS problem is well known and the cheap fet fix is posted in many places on the internet. They usually go bad at 50K miles (just like mine did). Get the tacoma and you won't have any regrets if you can handle the interior noise and rougher ride. Plus you won't have to get front end alignments every 15K miles.

Chevy is the main reason I switched to Toyota. I had a 97 Chevy truck. it was always in the shop. At one point the tension bar for the drive belt bent for no reason at all. That was the last straw for me. I looked around and asked people about quality etc. Then I went to used car lots and found my answer. There were plenty of Chevy's, Ford's and Dodge's, but hardly any Toyota's at all. This was in 1999.

I bought a '99 Tacoma Prerunner. I had driven the hell out of it. At one point I was doing weekly commutes from Dallas< TX to Austin, TX..about a 3.5 hour trip.

This truck has never had one problem with the engine (knock on wood) or of any construction or design flaws.

I recomnend it to all my friends (3 of which ahve bought one). it's an awesome truck and I will never get rid of it. Several people at work keep asking me to sell it to them. Basically they don't like the new styles and I have kept mine in pristine condition.

Good luck, I have seen a few 99-00 for sale but it seems that year range is popular, around here anyway.

I've had a 99 prerunner for three years, absolutely no problems powertrain-wise. In fact, my warranty runs out in about a month and I'm racking my brain trying to find something wrong that I can get fixed before then...

Get the 3.4 L V-6. I just drove it across country for the 2nd time. This time, I put a class 3 trailer hitch and towed a 6x12 trailer with about 2700 pounds inside it. This is close to the tacoma's towing limit as far as I could tell...it performed like a dream. I had the a/c on going up hills in the desert heat and never smelled the coolant, engine never lost power. Excellent truck...

And if you need more power, there are alot of performance accessories for it
