I have a 95 Grand Am SE 5 spd and something has popped on the shifter so now I can't really shift into any gear. The knob moves around freely as if there are no gears to go into. I started to lose gears slowly until there was really nothing, I did manage to drive it home but it was like trying to shift into too high a gear instead of 1st from park. I'm just curious if this is a major or minor repair? And what I can do to fix it.

you'll hafta take off the center console so you can see much of the gear shift. Look for missing bolts or any rods being broken. Make sure the spring is still attached at the base of the shifter..that might be why its loose. Is it only hard to put it in one particular gear or in all 5 of them including reverse? Also, did you actually hear something pop out of place? Let me know man.

Yeah I'll get into that this weekend - fun fun. All my gears have disappeared, it doesn't wanna lock into anything the shifter just floats around.

ok, yeah definitly check under the console for everything i mentioned. Im doubting that you lost ur tranny cuz unless you did something very strenuous on it, you wouldnt lose them all at the same time. It sounds like a cheap fix. BTW, you can check the spring right now without removing the console. Just lift up the shifter boot and look down. If you dont see a spring thats probably ur problem

Yeah I heard something... this was when I first got in to take off and then maybe 2-3 miles later I start losing gears. I was just a lil confused because I was able to get it into some gear, don't really know what it was, to get it home
