Greeting's!
I'm a disabled/retired Police Detective located in East-KY and I recently sold a Mercedes and bought a 1994 S-10 Blazer 4.3 Vortec because it was in great shape!! It was a one owner and only had 89,000 original miles!! New Paint and looks great!
Now, I've put about 2,000 miles on it and I'am having some problems...First, the fuel pump.. went out, on a return trip from Chas. S.C.(*with the wife in it...:-( $508.00 dollars... PS- We love tourists! Dealership usa!!...LOL
On the trip down, I noticed it seemed to be starving for fuel, i.e. the fuel pump "I'd hoped"...However, even after the fuel pump etc. replacment, the engine seems to lope/strain/downshift and get lousy gas milage...
I contacted the previous owner, who said, he had driven it everywhere, and he had just replaced the fuel pump ( with an *aftermarket part ) a year ago!!! He also said he had tuned it and replaced all the fuel injectors...??
Now, I've already heard horror--stories about EGR's, Spider's, CPI's etc.. etc.etc. Anyone have an idea what may be causing it to perform bad at lower speeds, lope, seem to not get enough gas, down shift alot and miss, at idle, alittle while getting lousy gas milage??
Furthermore, anyone got or know where I may find on the net an "Engine Diagram" of the >> 4.3 Vortec <<...I dont even know what the "operation principal's" or even location of an EGR or the *others...
Where do I start? After, replacing the Fuel Pump/Strainer/filter, to track down this problem...Help?
Tnx..KYCOL

Okay it may not be so bad but yes it may cost a couple dollars. I just had the same thing happen to my 94 S10 Blazer a week ago. I had the same symptoms and all. First are you able to do simple motor work your self cause it is simple If your are then lets start. If your Blazer has a W in the vin then you have the CPI and you will be able to do this if not I am un familure with the other motor. First you will need a 10mm socket a long one if possible an extension and a pair of pliers as well as a star hex tool don't remember what size but you will need one to remove the top plenum (the one that says Vortec on it) then carefuly undo the 9-10 bolts that hold the plenum onto the manafold. You will need to remove some electical plugs and little things like that but it is simple. Next what you are going to do is look for washing what this is, is when one or both sides of the intake are clean showing a goldish metal. If the passenger side is clean and the driver side is black then it is you Fuel presure regulater (CPI) if the driver side is clean then it is your fuel supply lines. If it is your fuel pressure regulator just change the fuel lines anyway as a precaution. After that take the EGR off it is located in the front of the intake behind the tension pully. It is more then likely round with an electrcal plug coming off it. You will need the 10mm socket to remove this. you can go through the pulley bracket to get to the bolt on the passenger side not very hard and you dont have to remove the pulley. After EGR is off clean it out and make sure the pintle moves freely. Also clean the hole out in the intake that the EGR kooks up to do the top and bottom hole. I did a cap rotor plugs and wire change also. Truck runs mint and gas milage is better. Look to spend about $400.00. Parts can be bought from Autozone or some other parts stores and even EBAY for around $270 for the complete CPI and $45 for the fule supply lines and dont forget the gaskets for EGR and intake.

Now what exactly is the purpose of the egr?

Now what exactly is the purpose of the egr?
The EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Exhaust gas is routed back into the combustion chamber because the exhausted air is much hotter than the intake air (try touching a muffler sometime). By sending warmer gas into the combustion chamber, the air/fuel mix does not have to do as much work to heat up, and your engine runs more efficiently.
And Gives us S10 Blazer owners headaches :)

OK How bout another dumb question..LOL
Why can't you just close off the egr intake?
