90 accord. Could sure use a hand here

Hey gang,

Read through many posts on engine stalls and not finding a similar problem. Have a 90 accord 4dr ex 5spd. Have 71k on it. Driving down the freeway at speed and engine cuts out on me. Drifted to side of freeway and had car towed home. Here I sit. Shorted the diagnostic plug and the CE light comes on but codes for nothing, just stays on.

I start my car cold and it runs at fast idle until it reaches just about normal operating temp at the dash. As it is very near normal op. temp. I watch the temp continue to slowly rise and my rpm's drop equally as slow. When at normal op. temp the engine kills. I can recreate this situation everytime from a cold start.

What do I want from you? Looking for a place to start. Know enough about my car to do some things myself. Put a new engine in with my father in my other 90 accord but just moved my family to a new area and my Dad isn't so close anymore. So I'm kinda stuck. Thanks in advance for your help.

If I give it gas when it's at the point it's about to die on me I can keep it going. I can keep rpm's say at 3000 but as I'm holding it there it sharply drops and regains rpm's a one or twice over a few minutes.

one quick thing, is to go ahead and do a complete tune up on the car, including fuel filter, ignition wires, cap, rotor, spark plugs......make sure all that stuff is ruled out.

Now, as for your problem, my bet, or guess is going to be that something in the fast idle thermo valve is causing your motor to die. I know mine caused me a lot of grief in my 92.....including "missing" feeling as I drove at highway speeds at some points.

Double check all your fluid levels, and clean the fast idle valve.....worse case, replace it with a junkyard piece. Also, check your coolant temp sensor according to the manuals procedure. May want to replace this, as, I dunno if this could happen (it's certainly possible, but I think a code would be thrown), but maybe the sensor is giving the ECU bogus data at that temperature and is causing the ECU to feed the car too little/too much fuel.

Sounds a bit strange, but check those cheap things out first, let us know what happens, and maybe I can help you more later.
