painting under hood

just wondering how u guys painted under the hood of ur cars with the motor still in? did u just mask everything off?

Do you mean the bottom of the hood itself or engine bay?

I am pulling the motor to paint the engine bay.

With the motor still in? That sounds incredibly hard to do, and do it right. Im sure there is going to be spots you cant get to and if you rattle can it I can guarantee runs.

I've seen engine bays painted with everything still in it and it ends up looking like a half-assed job. The only good way is to take everything out and paint it that way. Other than that you're going to have to do a LOT of taping off and you'll probably miss a lot of spots if you don't shoot from the top and bottom of the car. And like Hybrid1990crx said it's probably going to run like crazy.

well if I do light coats it should be fine as far as running goes, and i could remove quite a bit of stuff to do it, like hoses and such, disconnect wires and move aside etc etc

i have painted an engine bay with everything in it with decent results, just clean everything up well, use light coats and take your time!

In order to leave it in you must at least take out all of the hoses, intake battery, fuse box, disconnect and move wire harness, take out fuel filter and vaccum canister. brake booster, header and radiator would be good too

I dont know sounds WAAAAY to hard. My bet would be if its for a show just spend some time getting the engine bay REALLY clean. I think that they would like that much better than a half ass paint job

Yeah, dude, clean it really good, use goo-gone and pressure washer. Picture this, your car is flat black right with some interior accents to make it have some flare. Well, when you pop your hood, you'll have a pristine white background to show off your color-accented mods and it will look tight... at least for now. I assume that you'll probably do a swap or take out motor or whatever when you do the big blue paint job you're planning...

well i was thinking that when i do a motor swap i can just paint the engine bay flat black then so even if my cars painted then i'd still have a white engine bay, i dunno, too many options and i think i'm gonna go :screwy:

perhaps, but you're young and you know how/learning how to do body work. I wish I could revive my rex. The color is definitely getting old, driver side fender is dented and the couple rust spots have been there so long they seem like birthmarks or something to the car. Needless to say, it's embarrassing but it's my daily driver and when I'm behind the wheel I try not to think about it too much... ugh
