Shocks for my ride

I need new shock for my 73 formula. I don't want it to feel like a boat in the water but also I don't want to feel every little bump in the road I need something towards the middle. It's a street car but I do race it and enjoy going very fast. I don't know anything about shock though. I just know they can be either firm or soft. I have no idea who to go with or how much it'll cost. Anyone with some advice?
