96 Stratus - A slow learner??

Had a broken vacuum line causing the check engine light to be on. Repaired and light is off, but won't pass the smog check req. in CA. (Just moved here) The auto technician said it takes some cars like this a few days and miles to "relearn" that it's repaired - but after taking it back in 3-4 times over the last two weeks, it still won't pass the test.

Technician called "someplace" and they recommended taking it thru a series of gymnastics like running the A/C and rear defogger, then idling for 2 mins before taking up to 55, then back to 20 for 2 mins.....all kinds of things that are almost impossible to do in anyplace but the country.

They said we may have to perform this test up to five times to reset the computer!! Is this for real?? Has anyone heard of a car that is so difficult to realize it's repaired and finally reset itself? Technician said he's never seen it take more than 2-3 days. Help??

I assume the codes were cleared. If so try unhooking the battery for 30 sec.s or so then driving the car for a couple of days putting 100 miles on it and trying again. Stratus and Neon are slow learners.
