I recently had the same problem with my 96 SL. It turned out that, even though the car ran OK, I had a weak battery. It was replaced & 'then' the modules for the rollbar & the top had to be reset. The dealer told me the computer module for the top needed to be replaced. I had already priced a module on the internet(for much less) so I opted NOT to have the dealer replace it. Driving home, I noticed the light for the top was not on. Once I got home, I tested it. It WORKED! That was 2 months ago. It's been working great since then.
I.e, have a weak battery replaced & then both computer modules reset. Hopefully, the computer module for the top won't need replacing. IF it does, you can find rebuilt ones on the internet for around $500. Good luck.
