Is your muffler new or it has not been replaced?
You might just have to get a new muffler or get two mufflers and get a Y pipe to redirect the exhaust to the two mufflers.

Too restrictive mufflers would cause some exhaust problem and harder for your engine. Clogged catalytic converter causes the engine to work harder just expel the restricted exhaust due to clogged cat. Some folks gets a free flowing catalytic converter when they replace their old cat.

My 88 Olds Calais 2.3 Quad 4 had that same problem. I replaced the CAT and the Muffler but learned that the section of pipe from the exhause manifold to the CAT was rotted out. Turned out there was a lot of rust in the entire system so I had it replaced. Local mechanic here in CT was able to replace all the plumbing for $250. Now the car is MUCH quieter and my gas milage went up.

our cutlass ceira has a 98-2000 grand cherokee cat in it and its farly quite after the altenater belt warms up and stops sliping plus the emisions are almost zero! you could suck on the tail pipe for hours and no carbon minoxide (dont try this at home)
