91 Cavalier - All the Gauges acting Crazy!

On my girlfriends 1991 Caviler (4 door, 4cyl) the gauges seem to be operating erratically. Like you will be driving on the hiway and it flips up to 160 then and back to 100 or whatever...or it will filp to 160 to 0 to 100...and you havent given it any more or less gas. The other gauges for the oil, temp, all do the same.

The car doesn't appear to be acting any differently other then that, sounds and drives the same. Just all the needles/gauges are going all over the place.

Maybe its the battery or alternator?

Did she recently install a new sterio or anything new in the dash area?
When I installed a new sterio in my car, it was not grounded correctly,
and a part of the metal case was touching the metal inside the dash.
That made my gauges jump like crazy, and I kept burning out the
interior dash light fuse too.
So she may want to check that out....
