hello, i have a 4 cylinder1988 4runner and i have a few questions. what do you think is the best performance part to buy?or what is the cheapest part that will increase my HP? there are ricers all around where i live and i would like to destroy them, or give some of the faster cars around a run for their money.

Honestly... I wouldnt even bother with a 4cylander. You could probably spend about a grand and it would just get you to where a v6 is stock. Your best bet would be to do an engine swap with a more powerful engine... If you dont wanna do that then you could go with: exhaust, headers, new performance airfilter, new cams....maybee even put a nitrous kit on it. That would be really hard on that engine but it would add alot of power... hope some of this helps

Well, I think if your gonna do an engine conversion, I think you might as well go all out. I would go with a 350 chevy, if you wanted something less drastic you could just put a 6 or 8 cylander 4runner engine in. Any way you look at it, its going to be really expensive though. I dont think you would be able to do it for less than 3 grand. You could probly find a good engine for about $1500-$2000. Then your going to need a new transmission. Then you can get the conversion kit at downeyoff-road.com for about $600. After that if you put exhaust, headers and intake, your 4runner would fly, but in my opinon $4000 is alot of money to spend on an 88 4runner. Just doing exhaust, headers and cams would add noticable power to what u have now, but i dont think you'll be able to beat many cars with just that.
