I have seen a rex before somewhere on the net with a targa top. How hard would it be to do this?

question was just asked recently in the honda help forum...
i think itz pretty easy to do the top...just brace the body then cut across...then get like a del sol rubber sealer to put on the body and the part that was cut...but remember thata u have to cut away at the removable top some b/c of the rubber sealer...
then i think the hardest part is doing the doors

Crap I forgot about the doors. How would you make it latch to stay on?
BLU CIVIC

the doors would be hard b/c u'd have to cut the tops of the doors and having done that, u wouldn'd want ur door to open with the top missing, so u'd have to cut the top of the door off and probably wed it to the body 1st...minus the mirror...and then go from there doing some fab work

Well see heres the situation. My old A6 has had it, I think I blew a piston ring. So I am building a Y8 for boost for my hatch.
After that is done I will build my a6 back for fuel econ. Then I was going to drop it in a del sol or CRX. I love the targa top (after riding with my friend). I think the CRX looks better than a sol though. Anyways thats why I want to do it.

I want one really bad now! :(. What if you cut off the part on the door, and welded and molded that to the roof piece, then it would be removable with the top. What ya think?

From what I've seen the glass roofs on the JDM SIRs run the length of the whole roof. I guess that would be a TARGA design but it's not removable (?) Anyway, y'all should be happy to have a solid roof. I spent 2 hours after work yesterday messing with my sunroof in 95 degree heat because the plexiglass bubbled up out of the weather stripping. My buddy who helped me do this replacement fucked it up so bad that it looks like total crap! At least he gave me a check for half the price of the plexiglass sheeting. That was a few months ago and I already need to replace the damn thing. The hard part is getting it to be level with the roof itself. My roof is not exactly level on the one side because rust killed the original sunroof and left it warped. I got it straight now temporarily with some thick rubber, a thin piece of wood, and vynil inserts but I swear I was ready to kill cuz it was pissing me off so bad. Next time I do this I'm going to do it right with some kind of firm plastic insert or even CF. If I had the garage and the types of cutting devices required I would never ask that friend to help me. Sorry to get off the topic...

what if you cut the roof out, and reattached the frame of the door directly to the door itself. like if you look at turtle's sig pic, just cut the yellow out and leave the black surround, that way the glass of the door is still protected.

I was thinking about making a fiberglass mold over the roof and door parts. Pull the mold off and the cut the roof and door parts. Then take the fiberglass mold and make a Carbon fiber targa top that would fit in. Going to exp. with some things. Got to find a CRX project car first.

if u leave the b pillar on the door and weld everything else to the frame (minus the mirror...would have to cut around it) then cut for the targa top....that would work great

My biggest concern is bracing.....how would I brace it. That would suck to roll over and not have proper bracing to hold up.
BLU CIVIC
07-08-2004, 06:28 PM
well..IMO where ur cuting it is inbetween the A and B pillars, so u won't need any bracing unless u were cuttin thru them...but for structural integrity...i say take off the head liner and add some braces across the ceiling then put the headliner back on covering

What do you mean like across the car? I'm talking about the front section....its kind of free standing.

There's some dude around here that has a crx, and his top is made out of whatever convertable tops are made of. Looks ok, but its the only one i've ever seen like it

what i mean is arcoss the car and not down the middle...
one way to build up the support on the A pillar is to take the trim off and weld long metal strips to the frame....like up the A pillar across the top and back down the other A pillar...will add a lil weight but increase safety

Yes, don't most convertibles have free standing A pillars? I believe their windshields are more verticle though, unlike the CRX. The new Mitsubishi Spider has a pretty big windshield like the rex though.
Also, if you wanted to support the B pillar section horizontally across the car I believe they make a 3-point roll bar that would work sweet. Damn, some great ideas, if you do it post pics. And if I ever fix my sunroof to be cosmetically decent I'll do the same...
