Picked up a 2000 ITR in Jan this year and have noticed that the thing seems to be burning oil.. i mean, probably 1L for every 550-600 miles.. I have spoken to diff people (including Honda dealer) and every1 is giving diff advice.. is this normal/acceptable or do I need to worry?? Honda said anything upto 1 L for 500m is acceptable!! sounds excessive to me tho I dont know.. please help
Thanks

Thats full of crap. Burning 1 litre of oil per 500 miles is a serious problem, thats 25% of the whole oil tank!! (*since integra has 4l oil tank ). My friends type r had the same problem and he had to change the head gasket. It was done for free since it was under warranty. Your dealer is cheating you

how often are you getting on it. Or should I say how often do you hit vtec? If you are reving it hard alot, then it is going to burn oil. My gsr burns a quart of oil every 800-100 miles when I am getting on it alot, but when I drive more moderatly then I don't go through neer as much.

yeah, but a quart is much less than a liter. I think it is a problem.

burning oil already try not taking it up to 8000rpm for get vtec u can make any car got to 8000 rpm just take out the rev limiter but eventually they are going to start burning oil

Ah true that. I skimmed through to fast and thought he was only burning a quart every 5-600 mi. So ya a liter is deffently a problem!

Try different oil types. A shop put in a thin, synthetic Mobil and I was burning about a quart every 3 days. I switched to a heavier oil and the problem stopped completely. This was on a 95 gsr with 90k mi though...
Checking the head gasket is a good idea too.

nice one for all the advice.. general deal is -
Car has done about 78k on a 2000 model. I have not clocked up much mileage myself, but guess it would be fair to say they have been quite hard miles.. ie quite high on the revs.. The car is running 10w 40 Esso Ultron which I guess is pretty thin compound. Can anyone recommend a different oil to use? Also, how big a deal is a head gasket to replace caus I am out of warranty? Basically, am holding off on the tuning etc.. until I figure out how bad the problem is.. Like I said, Honda dealer said that 1L for 500m was normal consumption?! Like y'all have said seems like bad advice from Honda..

i had the same problem. Is the car smoking at all? if it's smoking it can be many things, like your head gasket is worn out. Also, look under the distributor underneath the intake manifold it might be leaking oil instead of burning it. I seen this problem quite a few times, behind the distibutor underneath the intake manifold will start a leak and you'll never see the oil cause it never reached the ground it gets hung up on the suspension components down there.

try using mobil 1 synthetic oil. And I would say use 10w 30. Head gaskets are a pain to replace. If you do replace it you had might as well replace the timing belt, and water pump at the same time since you will already be having everything torn off. It will save you money since you are supposed to do the timing belt and water pump at around 90k anyways. Be warned it can be expensive. For a head gasket the honda dealers quoted me anywhere from $1200-$1900 depending on wheather or not the head had to be worked my the machine shop. Honda mechanics are expensive. You could go somewhere else and probably get it done for around $600-$700. I had my timing belt and water pump done at a different time than my head gasket and I paid $400 for the timing/water, and $700 for the gasket. I would imagine if you do it all at once you could do it all for around 1k, or a little less. You could always do the head gasket yourself, just make sure and get new head bolts (always good to replace those any time the head is removed, and make sure and crank the head down to the proper lbs of wrench torque. It it is too tight or to loose you could blow the new head gasket!) Good luck!

although oil burn can be caused by a leaky head gasket, i cant believe no one has mentioned bad rings which are a much much more likely cause.
