I just purchased a 2000 740IL with the built in CPT 6000VR phone. It is an analog phone and no service providers will activate it. Can it be upgraded to a digital? Do I have any options?

You can always use it to make collect calls or use a calling card. Sorry I'm not really helpful but I thought people should know that old cells can still be used, including those really cool huge ones you find at thrift stores.

Really?
I bought and installed an analog phone in my 92 735iL. How do you make a calling card call on that? All I can manage to do is unlock it and dial 911. Do you know the procedures?

A cellular carrier cannot always identify where to bill the airtime for an activated or unactivated cellular phone. This generally happens when a cellular phone is roaming or in other words, placing calls outside the customers home market area. If the cellular carrier cannot identify the phone and where to bill the airtime, then manual roaming is offered. Manual roaming options to the caller are, charge the call to a credit card, charge the call to the callers home phone or call collect.
So, to place a call, dial the number on the phone and press the send button. A recording or live operator will assist with the charge or collect call in most areas. You will be asked for a credit card or collect call option. You will be charged anywhere from $1.20 to $1.80 per minute for credit card calls in most areas.
Obviously it's too expensive to use the service except in an emergency. What I did for a little bit until I got bored was call a friend collect, say what I need to in that "please record your name" area, then hang up. Everyone thinks they're so cool with their tiny cellphones. Well nothing's cooler than a briefcase phone.

I tried to replace my analog 6000 with a ditigal star tac from a 2001 740. Don't waist your time they are not interchangable! I know there must be some electrical wizzard out there who can solve this problem for less than the 2,500. the BMW dealers want.

Hmmm.. Well, mine only comes back with a recording from AT&T "This call cannot be completed. Please call your operator blah blah blah.... Message 2-T"
