tranny on '94 slipping

My '94 maxima w/v6 the tranny is slipping. When I try to accelerate from
65 to say 80, the rpm's go way up but the car won't speed up accordingly. Also, when accelerating from a dead stop, the car won't take off as quickly as it use to.
My question is, could the crank position sensor somehow be responsible
for the slipping tranny? A friend of mine says it's possible, but i sure as hell don't know.
The car only has 95K miles and has always been serviced at the designated intervals. I no longer have a mechanic I can trust and i've been screwed before. It's my wifes car. I own a Jeep Wrangler which I perform all the work on myself. But the maxima is a different story and anything other than routine maintenence and it goes to the shop.
Any help is appreciated!

is the tranny a 5 speed manual?? if it is, then ur clutch is goin quick...its the same exact thing that happened to mine (i've got an 89 SE 5 spd)...luckily i was on my way to work, which is a mechanic shop, and i just left it there...they installed a used tranny n new clutch (the tranny was startin to go too...i had no first gear and in reverse the whole car would shudder) but the car is fine now...if its an auto im not sure what it could be...unless you're like really low on tranny fluid...

I suggest posting the same question at www.maxima.org. There are some pretty knowledgeable guys that hang out over there, especially in the 3rd gen forum. The site seems to be down this morning, however...

Had the same problem with my '92 maxima auto. Hit the gas, gear would drop, rpms go high but the gear never catches. It was the solenoid pack for me ....about $500 to fix though!
Worked great for the next 15k miles but than it started slipping again...so it could have been a bigger problem. Needless to say, i traded in the max as soon as i noticed it slipping again.
