Im 16, unliscensed, no permit, however, I did my very first drifts last nite and I think I may be hooked...it was just in an empty parking lot and not on a drift track but it was stilll fun. I just wanted to let everyone know theres a new drifter in town, expect me to be doing it legally soon.

By Legally you mean at a sanctioned drift event right?

Not in a parking lot, which is still illegal even if you have a license.

I'd suggest not learning to drift right off the bat, learn to drive first. But whatever floats your boat.

exactly...before you try and drift you should try and drive first...and don't say that your a good driver, unless you think that a good driver is someone who can go fast.

O i dont feel im a good driver, lack of experience. I just know how to drift cause my buddy showed me how a while ago...and i finally got the chance. I dont plan on consistently driving, and I would never go on major streets until I have my permit because i would not want to endanger other people

What? did he teach you how to yank the ebrake when you turn or something?
If you don't know how to drive, how do you expect to drift???

So going on major streets and drifting with your permit wont endanger other people?

I know how to drive, I just assume I'm not a good driver b/c i lack experience.

lol, you guys are probly gonna make fun of me but i'm kinda like this guy. i'm 17, but i've been driving on my permit for about 20 months (i never was one to actaully attend school much, so with illinois rules i couldn't get my liscence till i was, and now that i dropped out about a year ago i have to get my ged before my license). driving everyday, everywhere, and ALOT. i've done more than a few e-brake slides, which aren't drifts, but i have a fealing i could learn. The best thing is driving when there's just a HUGE snow storm... no one's on the roads and they haven't been plowed... can anyone say FWD doughnuts? lighten up on the guy, he's learning, as i still am. one thing though dude, get some experience, but even more important (i think), know your specific car's limits, both limited by you and limited by it's performance. have fun, but take it to a track (which i will do once i start drifting, after i get my lisence and own car)

I think these guys are railing on him with fair humor. For some reason every kid who drives moms Pt cruiser around the block thinks they have masterd the art of driving, and next week are going to qualify for the grand prix. It's kinda funny and kinda like life but the more you learn about driving the more you realize you have to learn. Practice is the only way to get better you just have to know the safe places.
It is also hard to keep a straight face when someone says they learned how to drift a car in an evening in a parking lot.

I wish I knew how to drift just by sliding the car in a parking lot. :iceslolan

Just go to Wendy's or any other fast food joint and help yourself to a number of those plastic trays that your heart clogging food sits on.
Stick them under the rear tyres (provided it is FWD) and engage the e-brake.
Fun For All! Wheeee!

Why not just take it to the dirt?

Boss San
09-16-2004, 04:58 PM
That works quite well too, even if there is a slightly larger chance of breaking something on your car depending on how good the dirt road is.

Are you 16 too? LOL

1. What's your point comparing a burnout with a drift?

2. You don't need dirt to drift I just think it's easier to get a feel for sliding, you don't have to go as fast, and there are more safe places to drift on dirt. And some people just prefer dirt or in my case dirt, mud, snow, ice, rocks, grass, people, deer, and cammel snot.

you cant drift if your rear tires dont spin and your tires spin with a burn out dont they?

Read this.
It will put you about 1% closer to knowing how to drift.

Thanks for the inspiration to finally write this up.

Dudes, the car makes all the difference...

I myself have owned my 180sx for about 6 months along with my friend who also bought one. My friend is the SHITTEST driver you've seen, yet after practice practice practice in abondened parking lots in the wee hours of the morning he learned quicker than any ghey internet tutorial

I'm assuming you drifted in your car which, by your signature, is a Grand-Am?

How exactly do you do that? :screwy:

Dude, you need to go to the track with a RWD car and then learn for years. Then maybe you'll be closer.
