95 with 1.9 engine overheated-damaged?

I own a 95 Escort LX Automatic with only 61,000 Miles. recently I was driving and lost power and started to hear a tapping noise in the engine. The engine then died. Turns out the engine had seriously overheated- the temp sensor for the dashboard gauge was defective, so I may have been overheating for awhile. (gas milage had seemed poor lately) The waterpump is completely shot. The engine now runs with no unusual noise but has limited power. A dry compression check of the cylinders reads: 165 / 106 / 80 / 115. When I do a wet test with oil the results are 191/ 136 /103 / 160. the differences are 26 / 30 / 22 / 45. My question is do I only need to replace the head gasket. Or should I be thinking about replacing the piston rings also? The car is stuck up in the mountains and I do not think it is possibe for me to pull the engine, but I know the head gasket repair is possible. and the book says it is possible to pull the pistons without pulling the engine. any thoughts or tips would be welcome.

I would just replace the head gasket at this point. The rings may need to be replaced later but at least you will be able to get it running again. Also you may want to get another head just in case this one is too badly warped to be saved. You can buy a used one from a wrecking yard and save yourself some money. And don't forget to change the thermostat and get a new temp guage. You don't want to overheat it again.
