91 Taurus hesitant throttle

Hi, my friend has a 91 Taurus. He's doin me a huge favor so I figured the least I could do for him was try and fix his Taurus. Anyway, sometimes the car will hesitate when you first take off from a stop sign or whatever and then it will run fine. Now I'm not exactly asking for an exact fix unless you have one, but I was wondering, how do I check the codes? Also, where do I find what the codes mean? I know it's possible to do it without taking it to a dealer cause my bro has a 91 Explorer and we pulled the codes on it ourselves so I'm betting you can do the same with the Taurus.

Purchase or borrow a Ford code reader and then pop the hood , you will find the code reader connection near the fire wall. It is a plug socket hanging on the wiring harness, plug in the code reader and turn on the ignition, depending how sofisticated your reader is you will either get a series of beeps and flashes that you count and write down on a piece of paper or the code numbers will be directly displayed. Then all you have to do is look up the explanation in a Chilton or similar Taurus manual.

Yeah, but isn't there a way to do it without the code reader? We did it on a 91 Explorer where the check engine light flashes so many times and that tells you the code. And do you know of any website that has the codes already written?

There's a post somewhere on www.taurusclub.com on how to do this.

Sorry bro, I haven't been to his house. But I am going there tomorrow(Tuesday) and we are gonna be doing some other work but I'll try to sidetrack him onto the Taurus for a few to at least pull the codes.

My 94 gl had a similiar problem, it would studder when i had the petal at a sertain point, and i did the simple thing and replaced the fuel filter, wich made a big difference in how it performed, i dont know how resently you replaced your fuel filter but that might help the problem. The engine is just not getting enough fuel might just be the problem.

did yours always hesitate, or was it just after startup? Mine usually only does it once or twice after I start it
