I was just wondering if you could just cut the balance shaft belt and let it ride instead of removing the shafts themselves.

Thats fine for the front shaft, in fact thats how I usually do it unless I'm buying a built block. Installing the block off bearings improperly has caused many a crankwalked motor, so I would rather give up the 2 psi oil pressure and just leave the front bshaft in to block the oil holes.

But the rear is driven by the oil pump. You have to remove the front cover/rear bshaft, disassemble, and replace that shaft with the Mirage stubby shaft, part number given in the vfaqs. The one with the oil groove.

Running the rear shaft and not the front will cause some pretty noticealbe vibrations. You need both of them or none of them. ;)
