Is there any way i could do an engine swap with my 96 A4 2.8 12v? i would really like the S4 engine and as far as i can tell all the frame work and engine compartant is nearly identical. Let me know if it is possible ar even worth the $$. would i have to replace the trans as well??

I would not suggest the engine swap, the main reason being that an S4 engine is going to be really hard to find and expensive if you do find it. You would be better off buying a 2000 S4 and selling your car. On the other hand, your engine is almost the same as the one in the S4, all you need to add is a turbocharger/supercharger kit. There is a guy on another forum that put a supercharger on his 2.8, and it is pulling around 300hp. He is really happy with it. Check out www.audi-sport.net and do a search on "supercharger" it should come up wiht it. You might run into probs with your engine only being a 12valve though, but I don't know for sure.

another idea may to be put a turbo on the 2.7 engine if you have it, and drop in a new chip.
i've heard the only diff between the A6 2.7t and S4 is the ecu, and the same 2.7 n/a engine is used in the A4 (if i remember right).

there's not a lot you can do with a 96 2.8, except for the supercharger, and i've only heard of one for 98-01 2.8 30v's. I would suggest selling your car (if you really want the performance and have the money), and getting either a 00-01 S4 or a 01 A4 1.8t, those can be customized fairly easily and will a little cheaper than the S4.

Another good idea, but i really cannot afford to buy a new car. Being a college student i have very little money to any mods in the first place. I think i'll stick with my car and try some less expensive mods plus i just bought some Flick Wasps 18 rims so im really low on cash. but i really appreciate all the advice.

I am brand new here, but I saw this end just wanted to let you know that a friend of mine did this swap. He has a 1998 a4 that he blew the engine on. He swapped the engine and tranny from an s4 and it friggin rocks! the car is crazy. He also has the 3 (or 4) stage chip in it to allow more HP with different octane fuels, blow off valves, full exhaust, springs/shocks.
Like I said, I dont know the details, but I know he did it and it kicks. I will try and get more if needed.

note: he bought the engine/tranny for around $6k I think

Thanks again for the input. I would love to spend some serious $$ on all that crap but right now i am dirt poor. those rims set me back, and i just found out today that i need a new upper link "control arm" so that will again set me back. Owning a foreign car in a small town... the worst.

i'm pretty sure it's nearly impossible to swap engines between the a4 and s4, that's why audi made it a different car, and not just another a4 with a better engine. they built a larger engine slot to allow the belt to fit in and also put more intakes on the car, that's why it might not work, but i'm not sure on the 2.7

this is what i got from my friend. i am going to call him later for the details.
"The swap was hard, but not impossible. Very expensive."
in the long run....like every one says and you have said...it's going to cost too much for what you want. you said you are low on cash...so there are other ways to get more power.
