OK, heres my problem, I'm currently in the market for either an s2000 or a g35...
IMO the s2k is the better car, but it has no real torque, and i cant rev it to 6k everytime to get some serious power, and thats when i heard about vtec controllers. How do they work? Can you take a controller and make the vtec kick in at like 4k and not have any engine problems? And if you can do that, will it pick up in speed like the g35 which has excellent torque?

No it wont. The Vtec controllers are fitted best for a modded engine, for example a supercharged or turbocharged engine were the Ecu is replaced.
If you set the vtec engagement to be lower on a stock engine it will not help it, maybe a little but not worth it. Honda sets the engagement point in the engines for a reason, so when a normal engine would be running out of breath the vtec system kicks in and lets the engine sustain its torque up to higher rpms.
So in short, its a waste of money.

what he said,
unless you have some serious modifications, it will not help very much

even if you had modifications....id only kick the vtec in at a higher rpm...thats where its more effective.

Thats why you have to get FATTER CAMS! Then you'll see some serious power. Vtec controller does help when you have basic bolt ons or more mods to it. To be honest with you, i'd get hondata. That alone will get you see'n 15-35 hp gain depending how well its tuned.

This thread is a month and a half old, but anyway, wouldn't having the vtec kick in earlier do more harm than good, because you would lose the low end torque you get from the regular cams???

Yeh but still i have to correct somthing. Its not that old really.

Yes/no. Depends on how its tuned. Some ppl want the vtec to kick in earlier so they have to get it tuned properly.

Mr. Papadakis, the driver for the AEM 2003 Civic(powered by a twin-turbo NSX engine), hasn't changed the VTec engagement point on his car, and it makes 1,500+hp. So why would you want to on a driver car?
