changing alternator

I have a 1996 gmc ext 5.7l .Has any body tried changing the alternator to AD244 instead of the cs130d. With the regulator in the ad244 will work. Or do you have to take the chip out of the cs130d regulater and put it in the AD244. I know you can get the cs130d up to 180A but I want a different look.
