Driving around St. George Utah (56k, don't bother)

Starting out, Blake in his carseat...
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1602.jpg
Turning onto Snow Canyon Parkway...to the left are the rock bluffs over Ivins and Dixie Downs.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1605.jpg
Heading up Bluff st (hwy ??) this rock is on the left. It is flat and ripply.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1613.jpg
A lot of the rocks around this area are lava rocks. There used to be volcanoes around here, none are active any more. This volcanic deposit is only a mile or two from my house.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1614.jpg
Some red rocks. By the time I get done with this thread you will never want to see red rocks again. :p
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1615.jpg
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1619.jpg
My husband...he never takes off those damn glasses. Even indoors at night.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1621.jpg
This is one of my favorite formations. It's just gorgeous.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1624.jpg

http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1652.jpg
This is about as green as anything gets out here without constant watering.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1627.jpg
Obligatory self-shot.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1635.jpg
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1636.jpg
We got out to Diamond Valley and turned around in front of this house. There are a LOT of southwestern-style "haciendas" here. Most of the houses are white stucco with red tile roofs.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1637.jpg
Heading back. It looks like we're up in elevation but it's still 95+ degrees out.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1640.jpg
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1668.jpg
We turn back onto Snow Canyon Parkway. This part is newly constructed and runs up along the bluff over St. George. In spots, to keep the slope reasonable, they drilled dynamite and blasted the road through the rock.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1675.jpg
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1677.jpg
Another teeny volcano.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1681.jpg
Looking northeast on top of the bluff, you can see ridges coated in volcanic rock.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1682.jpg
It's no Arches National Park (http://www.americanparknetwork.com/parkinfo/ar/) but neat anyhow. A small (2x3') arch naturally formed on top of the bluff.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1688.jpg
We stop on top of the bluff, there is parking for hiking on these rocks. I have hiked other times, but today is too darn hot and the baby is sleeping.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1694.jpg
The next two are the same rock, from the side and the front. It is probably 40-50' tall, and it has "Dixie" painted on it because St. George is called "Southern Utah's Dixie". Why? Apparently they used to grow cotton here.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1695.jpg
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1705.jpg
Looking off the bluff. "D" for "Dixie" again.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1707.jpg
Main section of town. Dead center is the temple. The building slightly left of center on the very bottom is where I work.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1708.jpg
a 4-story parking garage they're building. People say it's cursed because a worker fell to his death a few months ago, and a few weeks ago one of the welding machines exploded and caught fire.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1710.jpg
The bluff in the distance here has the airport on top of it. We're at a serious economic disadvantage right now because the airport has run out of space up there.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1713.jpg
Downtown, the new roundabout with some Mormon pioneer lady statue.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1722.jpg
St. George didn't grow much during the depression. In fact it didn't grow much at all until the late 80's. In the seventies it was around 10,000 people - now, 60,000. My point is that the Art Moderne style house pictured below is the ONLY one of its style in St. George. It's my favorite house. :)
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1728.jpg
C'mon, this car is funny.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1739.jpg
The UGLIEST house in the city. You'd think if they can afford something that big, they could afford some style to go with it. EESH.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1742.jpg
To the southeast there is less red rock, just some big mesas.
http://img49.photobucket.com/albums/v149/boingo82/070304redrock/DSCF1758.jpg
Back home again. :)
