My brother just went through all this. Was rejected over and over...finally American Express gave him a card. You'll just have to find one with an astronomical APR. And remember, you're never too young to have crippling debt...

3-5k!!!! Are you nuts? You will never get a limit that high in the first year, and why would you want to rack up high interest debt asap?

It's fairly easy to get credit cards these days. I had $40,000 in credit cards (not debt) by the time I was 19. Apply online with Discover, AmEX, Visa. Just try all of them, that's what I did and I have like 10 different credit cards. :sly:

What information do you need to provide when applying? Can you use a PO box? and do they need SSN number ect?

SSN, address, income, the works.

I don't mean to be offensive but if you plan on getting a lot of credit just to mod your car, you're being short sighted and stupid. Interest is a killer and snowballs on itself very very quickly. Irresponsible credit card use will destroy you. Bankruptcy and all it's ill effects will haunt you for the rest of your life. Don't be dumb. Get a card, charge a few things, pay it off on time, don't carry a balance and for God sakes, spend within your means. Build credit slowly, and carefully. Find cards that reward you like Discover. It's worth it in the long run. I'm one year shy of graduating from college and I've accumulated the credit necessary to purchase a house as soon as I graduate.

Is there any way i can get a cc w/ out using a SSN?

Probably not. Every app I've ever seen or filled out asks for the SSN.

$3-5000 limit huh? Right...
At first, you'll probably only be able to get a limit of $500 with no past credit. It'll probably take 1.5-2 years to get a $5000 limit if you use the card and make payments which are more than the minimum. It's best to pay off your balance every month.

And yes, you do need a ssn.

Okay thanks for the info, so i can get cards from different CC companys right? so i can have like 7 cards, and then run them all to the $500 limit, then once i reach that limit they can't be used anymore and i just have to pay them off?

Is there a reason you don't want to give them a SS#...are you a fugitive?

Whoa! Red light! Danger! Danger!

First of all, the credit companies can see the number of accounts you have. They'll stop issuing you credit cards if you have a lot of accounts, especially with no credit history.

Not only that, if you have a lot of accounts open with high balances, your credit rating goes down.

If you somehow aren't able to make the payments on each of the accounts, your credit rating goes down.

Not good.

Maybe it's best you don't get a credit card yet until you learn more about credit and how it works. If you do the wrong thing, you'll be sorry later on when you try to buy a new car, house, get a loan, etc...

If you are 18, you must be a student. Bank of America (my bank) offers a student card (Visa). I Got one completely in my name with a limit of $10,000. The fact that my parents have been members for years must have helped the process though

Actually it's sort of like common sense, if you don't have any, you're in trouble. I would recommend getting a job first.

Can I recommend having your credit limit no higher than whatever salary you make every 2 weeks? If you're earning $500/week, have a $1000 limit etc. It really is the only way to stay out of trouble.

Hahaha, yeah, Best Buy credit cards are actually somewhat tough to get. (not for me tho!! lol) Many department stores and the like require you to have some kind of credit before you can get one of their cards.
If you are serious about wanting to establish credit, not just to have "a bunch of free money" as someone put it, try a gas card. Go apply at a gas station (pick a popular one in your area). Those seemed fairly easy to get back when i was applying for cards.
Good luck, and don't be a dumbass and ruin the next 20 years of your life by getting into crazy amounts of debt! :cwm27:

I hope your not doing anything as stupid as creating a credit card under someone elses name. :eek7: But if your just trying to seek for a slightly higher credit until you can raise your own, then whoevers card your using, I hope you use it responsibily. Good luck. :)

And for their sake too.. Unless its your parents giving you a credit card, its considered a big gift.

They can be very helpful, or very hurtful. It all depends on how you use them. I'm paying off a pretty hefty balance on mine. I started doing stupid sh*&. Like using them for pizza, beer, presents for christmas, all kinds of non-essential things(with the exception of beer.) So, be careful.

Like Blu Civic said get a credit card with a limit of around $500 and build your credit up. Don't build debt and pay it back. The best thing to do is work on paying the credit card off every time the bill comes in. The more payments you have to pay the more interest adds up. Go to a bank, such as Wells Fargo or Bank of America and talk to them about getting a credit card. I have 3 credit cards, one of which I've had since I was 16 with a credit limit of $500. And the limit on that card is still $500.

I don't think he's worried about building credit. Just getting some cards to scam with...
