can anyone tell me what the normal amps should be while the engine is at idle? i currently have approx. 64 amps with a brand new battery, however i dont have a meter that can tell me if the alt. is putting out. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

You should be getting 14-15 volts with the engine running, and no accessories on. 12 volts with engine off. You really need a DVM to check it. Or else take it to the local aftermarket auto parts place and they'll check the charging system for free. The alternator is rated at 130 amps.

thanks for your reply, i have brought the car to an automotive parts store and they did check, thats how i know i have 64 amps, my question is if the alt. is rated at 130 amps, is that the max amps, or should i be running 64 amps. i know its delivering volts correctly. thanks again for the reply

Sounds like your electrical system is in good shape. 130 amps would be the maximum available current output of the alternator.
