timing chain

I broke down and put my 94 PU in the shop. first they wanted to reset the timing chain thinking it jump a tooth. Now they want to replace it and some guides for $1600. It does not look like that hard of a job if I got the tools. Is this a fair amount?
IF I let them do it what should I get done at the same time as long as they are in there?

NO - that is not a fair amount for a timing chain job. If you need the timing chain- the part is actually $120-140. If they are replacing the guides... you should know the why. Did the timing chain damage the pulleys or guides? How many guides? If it 'jumped' a tooth, are any of the teeth broken? Request all the used parts. Once the truck is split open, due a full tune-up (not overhaul!) - new plugs, new wires, new air filter, check hoses, water pump, belts, oil change (switch to synthetic) & maybe even service your injectors(costly $120). This at most is an $800-900 job. If you do nothing except the timing chain (you might need a timing chain-cover), this should set you back around $400-500, including labor. Make sure you insist on knowing EVERYTHING that is being done on your truck. $1600 is alot of work. Good luck.

ouch. will have to check with onther shop. they are in it already i felt stuck at this time. i rarely use a shop for my cars. they said guides broke not how many. will ask. i was going to call parts monday for chain price. fioghting for fair cost is no fun and cause of the situaion i feel taken advantage of, if the fee is excessive.

well, lets not jump the gun here, 1600 is a lot but get a written estimate and be sure to compare apples to apples when you compare prices. This is not a job I would reccomend to a novice, but if you are familiar with your truck and already work on stuff like brakes and maybe you replaced your starter contacts already, then you might think about doing this job. I did mine and this is a common problem on these vehicles, just be sure to get the "new" style chain guides when you do the work

Yes it is a 22RE. Have you don this before? I called some shops around the state and and got 1150 up to 1300. Got two prices for the parts. I remember one was 600 for a kit. These guys might just be a little bit expensive. But I am still not sure it was needed.

$600 wow! I looked at napa today and a timing kit for for that year truck was $98.89 and that incuded everything for the job. I have an 87 and an 85 toyota and my friend and his brother have an 85 and an 84 so we have had alot time to play around with these motors.The job isnt that bad you can just about do it with a 14 and a 12mm alone.however it is a little time consuming the first time you do it.

Wow. I will check napa here. Unfortunately they kinda had me in a tight spot and probably got for it. Since I called other shops and the price was lower but not enought to prove they were gouging me.

U can get a DOA Chain set with all parts and steel guides for about 220.
a respectable shop should only charge about 200 to 250 labor at the most. if you replace the water and oil pump while its apart that will set you back another 150. total cost should be 500 to 600 at the most. Hell toyota stealership only charges 600 to 700.

I bought the complete kit and timing cover off ebay for $85 that included gaskets, gears, chain, guides and cover. I would check there, it is a easy job to do by the way.

If your going to do it, do it right, buy a timing chain kit with the metal guide.. it is a little more expensive... but you will never have to worry about loosing a timing chain cover/water pump housing.. firedriver is right, if you had the time you could do it yourself, toy's are know for bad chains, get metal guides if you do it. It will cost more, but it is well worth it. It is a difficult job, just make sure you do everything right, and you shouldn't have a problem. fuck 1600$ way to much, but it is the biggest pain in the ass, it's not very fun.
