Mileage and gear display

I have a 2001 Silverado and my mileage and gear display is black. I can never tell what gear my truck is in, nor can I tell how many miles I have. Someone has told me I have a bad instrument cluster. Anyone know what the problem is and what it will take to fix it? Thanks.

You might just have a bulb out. Remove the instrument panel and see if the bulbs behind the display are replaceable in that area. I know some are and some aren't.
