Service Center says Computer has to be reprogrammed

I recently purchased an 02 TB with 48,000 miles. 2 days after buying it (just my luck) the Service Engine Soon light came on. I'm at my service center right now and they just told me that the computer system on these vehicles requires updating/reprogramming every couple of years. Price isn't too bad, about $75, but it still sounds like a strange thing.

Can anyone confirm this information? Do these things really need to be updated/reprogrammed periodically?

Thanks

Just about everything on the vehicle is now controlled by one of the computers. Pretty much a constant stream of updates from the factory from what I read. Seems like they never have to replace any parts, just reprogram the fault out of the system.

Did you fill up in those first two days? If so, it's possible that the gas cap was not on tight enough, (turn until you hear several clicks). If the tank (emissions system) isn't sealed correctly, the light will come on. Tighten cap and if this was the problem, you should see the light go out after a couple of engine starts.

Damn I wish I would have seen this sooner....
Your service center doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about!

The SES light illuminates when the PCM sees a fault with one of the systems it controls or monitors.
The PCM will set a code for that system or circuit.
On occasion, the PCM will be reprogrammed if there is a software glitch causing the light to illuminate.
There is no reason the PCM needs to be updated except when there is a concern that a new calibration will address
