how would an spl ported box sound, i mean would the base sound like any normal bass but hit much harder or would it only pick up the lowest notes?

well heres an example.. my friend has a 12 RE SX, in a vented box tuned to 40hz... it sounds decent at low volumes.. but when he turns it up.. it sounds all crappy.. and theres nothing wrong with the gain settings.. it just kinda sounds crappy at high volumes.. it does get pretty loud tho

Basically, if you were to play a frequency sweep (where the frequency starts somewhere in the midbass region and just slowly gets deeper and deeper), it would start out reasonably loud, as the frequency got lower it would get louder and louder and louder until it hit a huge peak, and then the response would just drop like a rock afterwards. So playing music you're going to have a huge peak at one frequency and everything else, both high and low, will be left in the dust, pretty similar to what a prefab bandpass box sounds like.

these are commonly known as "johnny-one-note" boxes.
