Who else is a die hard Anit-Drug supporter in here?

It seems that I am in a realm of my own lately... Half of my friends are in re-hab for Coke, THC, and Perscription Addictions.

Why? For what? What has it gotten anyone? Why not get a high off flying down a race-way at 140MPH in a Twin Turbo Zed?

It all just seems silly to me... Risking so much, for no apperent reason.

Most of the kids I know that do it... Do it for ONE reason only. It is the cool thing to do now-a-days. Little nineth grade girls, who may have had something going for them, are now constantly Coked out of their minds, or popping OxyContin in the middle of class.

<<=== Straight-Edge Here

most people I know go with weed and alcohol, not for any reason, just because they started and always wanna do it now... they always talk about how it costs so much and that they are gonna quit cuz its dumb yet they can't... I don't see why people think its cool to begin with

Strangers have the best candy.

You've kinda lost me here dude...

Now Im not one of those kids who go around preeching how bad drugs are and such... And have never had any experience with them.

I have seen first hand what the problem is... And what it causes. Some legal issues, and some personal modivation issues. (Not me, most of my friends)

All-State D1 Prospect Lacrosse players are now Coke heads who care nothing about anything but laying a few lines.

Hey, if you want to do drugs... Fine. Thats your deal, and im not going to deter you from it.

I personally... Will never do ANY drug. And when I do drink, I will do so discriminately.

I agree I really don't see what people love drugs so much.

If I want to get relaxed, I'll just go to a movie and chill while eating some popcorn and a cola, or my newest relaxation method: got to the local bookstore and read a car mag while eating a cheesecake in their cafe.

If I want to get a rush I'll go autox-ing, or to a rave club.

Why would I do drugs when I can get the same result trough other means.

I think chics would be happier with a guy going to a movie eating popcorn that getting high on his couch...

plus even going to a movie 5 days a week would be cheaper than drugs

Some people need a chemical to give them a relaxing high....I know of many honourary students that take the occasional drug (weed of course, nothing hardcore) Theres a differnece between an alcoholic and an ocasional drinker, same thing is said for those who smoke weed

I've done many drugs in my days. Now, it's pretty much just beer and the occasional shot. No more weed, coke, acid ,shrooms. I don't down people who smoke weed. I could care less. It does'nt do much for me anymore, except make me really hungry. Reality is slightly over-rated. If you got lots of cash, and time. Well, reality can be your best friend. But, I have niether. So I'll stick to my beer.

Haha Blu Civic.

I think Ben Harper said it best...

"My choice is what I choose to do,
and if its causing no harm It shouldnt bother you.
Your choice is who you, choose to be
And if your causing no harm, then your alright with me.

If you dont like my fire, then dont come around
'Cause Im gonna burn one down."

- "Burn one down" : Ben Harper

... Very good song :D

Like I said once before, if its what your into... Your deal. Not mine, it doesnt bother me.

About 90% of my friends are consistant drug users... And some of them are starting to see what im talking about. My bud just got fired from his job (same place I work) when they instituted a random drug test... He failed.

My buddy Max is in jail for selling Cocain... And to a minor none-the-less. He now has three charges on his head.

Corrupting a minor, posession of an illegal drug, intent to sell.

He'll be in juvi for a while... Does it seem worth it? He doesnt think so anymore.

There are different degrees of being straight-edge... Some wont drink... Some wont even have sexual encounters.

I personally wont drink until it is legal for me to do so... And even then, I will be VERY discriminate about it.

As for the sex part... I have a long-time girlfriend. Enough said about that subject.

I am not the type for random hook ups...

Anways, I need to set up a poll.

full on straight-edge here... no drugs, no alcohol, no sex, no ciggarrettes.

I'm not one to give into peer pressure so I don't struggle with any of it even if I'm at parties or with people getting high, but for someone that goes along with the crowd it would be a hard thing to do...

no joke, me and like 3 friends were building a BMX trail out in the woods by my friends house, well we'd all work for about 30 min. then they'd all get high and sit around for an hour while I worked... needless to say I got fed up and stopped helping and they never did any more work on it.

then you've got alcohol... I personally think alcohol is for boring people because if you need a chemical to make you intertaining and help you have fun then you've got to be one lame person... plus the fact of not remembering half of what you do and then add in puking... sure makes me wanna go get wasted!

Or was i doing it because it was what people wanted me to do? I'm a college kid, let me check shit out so i don't go around when i'm 40 years old wondering if i experienced anything during my young life. yeah i smoke weed, yeah i drink occasionally, and yes i'm a sexaholic who likes porn, but i'll never ever do any of that other crap, i'm all set with shooting crap into my veins, or snorting death up my nose, i'm just set with that. I have friends who smoke (I do every once in a blue moon), do cocaine (I was a little freaked about it, never went near it), do shrooms and maybe some other shit. Fine. Let them do it. They are still my friends. If that's their high then OK. Just like they can't explain what shrooms or coke feels like, I can't explain what 70MPH feels like on a turn where the sign says "SLOW. 25MPH". Yeah I'm being stupid, so are they. We're all stupid at some points. But for them if that's what it fee;ls like to live then they have my blessing.

Some consistant themes:
"I can get high on life" - bullshit. It's nowhere near the same.
"Let's goto a rave straight" - you could, I HAVE done it once or twice, but it's so much more of an enhanced experience after getting on the goey, coke and pills.

As a recreational substance user, the primary point I will make is that there is a difference between use and abuse. There are people every day having a quiet beer after work, and then there are alcoholics. And alcohol is completely legal. Just like there are people (most users) having a quiet line or cone after work and are still completely fine people. That's all - the majority of drug users like myself are normal and functioning members of society.

To all of you demonising/decrying drugs, to then turn around and tell me that 1. Ive never done them, 2. They messed one of my friends up and 3. Therefore, the same thing will happen to you - I'm sorry but you can all go and get fucked. When coming from somebody who supports doing drugs and does do drugs, telling somebody who doesn't do drugs and doesn't support using them that they have no room to speak, is rather meaningless.
To all of you demonising/decrying drugs, to then turn around and tell me that 1. Ive never done them, 2. They messed one of my friends up and 3. I'm not sure how I can make it any clearer, telling a person who's anti drug that their opinion doesn't matter because they've never done drugs is as rediculous as somebody saying that a drug user's opinion on people who believe in not doing drugs doesn't matter because he does do drugs. :icon16:

Drugs remain pretty lame - what is the point? Maybe you can explain it to me. The "soft" drugs seemed pretty lame to me, and the hardcore drugs I have no interest in ever doing. What is the point? I'm not even going to say that it's wrong, or evil, or any of that BS, I'm just wanting to know what the point of it is all about.

Stick with the current topic - legalisation and decriminalisation are completely different kettles of fish. The media, bastions of government that they are, have brainwashed the majority of society to the point where despite the fact that nearly every government on earth would love the tax dollars from legal substances, they have blown their chance to do it with the public outcry that would happen.

I don't particularly care what your opinion is of me, you are just another person on the internet. I have strong opinions about this and they will not be swayed. The following contradiction(s) is what has set me off:

Still, the social, legal and economic factors of illegal drug use go hand in hand with the decision of whether to use drugs.

I did not discuss taxes and decrimilization, as you bring up in your post. As things stand now, drug use in your country, in mine and many others is having a significantly detremental effect; the crime, the deaths, the turf wars, the violence, the explotation of the desperate, the misery of the addict's families, etc etc.

This kind of misery is not the product of government propeganda. Why do you think there would be a public outcry if such drugs were legalised? Because it's harmful. We, the non - drug- addled can see this. We choose not to have a society based in anarchy. We believe in a society with laws for the benefit of society as a whole.

The issue of governments wish to make money on drugs was not part of my post. Its the destruction of lives and societies, and money spent by governments in security, policing and welfare that is my issue.

To try and separate the two is just sugar coating the effects of illegal drug use.
To buy illegal drugs supports criminal activity. It affects and harms others. It wastes your tax dollars and mine. Illegal drug users must be held accountable and must be aware of the harmful results of their actions.
If people did not buy illegal drugs, all the misery and death involved with their production, distribution and use would not happen. Period.

I enjoy the intellectual challange of debating issues. Changing your mind about your own life and attitudes is not my goal. To be charitable, I would prefer you (and everyone else for that matter) did not fry your brain on drugs, as you seem to be a decent person, otherwise.

However, to deny the effects of the illegal drugs on others is to have blinders on. It denies the reality of the situation and is is a selfish act.

I am 26 years old, and I am very happy to be able to say that I have never done an illegal drug in my life. I have never smoked a cigarette. I used to drink, but haven't since february 98. I see the effects of drugs day in and day out at work. I see first hand the dangers it causes, and the troubles it brings. I am not expecting a reward, because I chose not to on the intentions of going federal law enforcement. Preaching about how you should be doing them, or telling others they are wrong for saying dont do drugs is wrong. that to me, is orse than the one who sells them to the person.

As I have said previously, the variety of legal substances available for use and abuse cause significantly more damage to society in terms of both death/bodily harm and impact on societies $$$. Specifically, tobacco and alcohol. I am not denying that there are ramifications for the suppliers and also for addicts, I am questioning why similar substances are legal, despite known negative side effects.

This kind of misery is not the product of government propeganda. Why do you think there would be a public outcry if such drugs were legalised? Because it's harmful. We, the non - drug- addled can see this. We choose not to have a society based in anarchy. We believe in a society with laws for the benefit of society as a whole.

Firstly, there would be a public outcry because the media has been working on the demonisation of drugs and their users for so long. My substances of choice (MDMA aka. Ecstasy and THC aka. weed) are not addicting and have minimal ongoing health problems, particularly compared to legal substances mentioned.

Legalising substances such as these would not lead to anarchy and the laws WOULD benefit society as a whole by cutting out the criminal element you mention.

The issue of governments wish to make money on drugs was not part of my post. Its the destruction of lives and societies, and money spent by governments in security, policing and welfare that is my issue.

Legalsiation would solve all of those problems and more. Look at the Netherlands. But as mentioned, is not a core issue here.

Period.

How is it a waste of my dollars? I earn money the honest, law abiding way and spend it in a way that I benefit from. 'Waste' of money is a subjective measure. I will state that in my particular circumstance I minimise harmful results to others. The place I buy from is very close to the top of the chain - producers who are not violent. In terms of use, I do not push it on others and am harming only myself if something goes wrong.

If people did not buy them, all problems would be solved? I don't think so. People would find ways of abusing other, legal substanses and the cycle would continue. Yours is a very narrow minded view of the solution.

I enjoy the intellectual challange of debating issues. Changing your mind about your own life and attitudes is not my goal. To be charitable, I would prefer you (and everyone else for that matter) did not fry your brain on drugs, as you seem to be a decent person, otherwise.

As do I. I am not motivated to continue this discussion by the unwavering belief that I am correct or have all the answers, but by understanding your rationale and you understanding mine, we both come away with a more wholistic understanding of the issue. And my brain is not 'fryed' on drugs - they are used to enhance an already good experience, not to be the experience within themselves.

However, to deny the effects of the illegal drugs on others is to have blinders on. It denies the reality of the situation and is is a selfish act.
The reality of the situation is what we are discussing. Your above sentence needs more explanation.

I agree that tobacco and alcohol have significant problems. However, their existence is not sufficient justification to legalize other drugs. Thier use is subject to limitations to control the harmful effects of their use, such as age restrictions on purchase, limitations on their use (no drunk driving), social limitations (no drinking at the workplace, no smoking indoors or around others who might object etc). Also, strides are being made to make their use less socially acceptable by the public in general.

Ecstasy and THC aka. weed) are not addicting and have minimal ongoing health problems, particularly compared to legal substances mentioned.Oz

Bullshit. There have been many more studies made on tobacco and alcohol because of their widespread use, abuse and health concerns.

Much is unknown about THC. However, the intellectual capacity of the stoners I know seems to be diminished. I owned and operated a construction company for many years. Drug abuse is common among workers in the industry. Many of my employees smoked weed and hash. So long as it was off work, I did not care. But they would share with me the need they felt to smoke the stuff. It controlled them. All they worked for was to get high. They would sacrifice so much; money to spend on the comforts of life, like a car or a decent place to live, or how their wives/girlfriends would get sick of their drug lifestyle, being high every week end, and they would leave. These guys were losing their kids too. They cared about the loss, but would still get high. That sounds like addiction to me.

Ecstacy is so new, likely it will be years before we know the long term effects. The news here had an article that links extacy use to symptoms like Parkinson's Disease. Why anyone would wish to be a guinea pig for the safety or lack thereof, of a new drug is beyond me. Drug companies spend billions world wide to test and redesign the safety of medicinal drugs. Most of their concoctions must be modified to improve safety, or are not approved due to undesireable effect.
Why should we believe that an illegal drug is any safer than the legal ones, or is at such a low risk for causing harm that it is safe for use. Have you ever heard of Thalidomide? Prime example of a drug thought to be safe, but wasn't.

Legalising substances such as these would not lead to anarchy and the laws WOULD benefit society as a whole by cutting out the criminal element you mention.

Read up on it a bit more. The pro drug media has upheld the Netherlands and Switzerland as a model for how society should run. However, the non drug users there feel it is a failed experiment. It has been widely criticised and justly so. I believe Switzerland made significant changes to their permissive drug laws in Zurich to control their spirallign health problems. My wife has relatives in the Netherlands. From their local media sources, things will change, sooner or later, again to control the detrimental side effects on society.

How is it a waste of my dollars? I earn money the honest, law abiding way and spend it in a way that I benefit from. 'Waste' of money is a subjective measure. Good for you. You are confusing what 'you' do with the overall effect on society in general. Do most drug users share your concern? Apparently not. Most users don't give a shit.
And in turn, my tax dollars and yours must clean up the aftermath of the gangland turf wars, and hire extra police to keep a cap on the property crimes and thefts performed by the addicts to support their habits. . Welfare must support the crackhead mother who can't feed her kids, or the innocent drive by shooting victim.

If people did not buy them, all problems would be solved? I don't think so. People would find ways of abusing other, legal substanses and the cycle would continue. Yours is a very narrow minded view of the solution.
Oz

If there was no penalty for stealing, do you think there would not be more thefts? Of course there would be. Society requires laws and punishment to guide the public and to control the harmful actions of others. I am sure people would abuse legal substances, but they are by nature not as addicting. People do not lie, cheat and steal as much to support legal habits. People will more likely spend every last dime they have to support a horribly addictive heroin habit, not to drink more Budweiser.

Finally, Oz,
"to deny the effects of the illegal drugs on others is to have blinders on. It denies the reality of the situation and is is a selfish act"
What more explaination is there?
People buy illegal drugs - they support the violent-riddled and exploitive production and distrucution system.
They use such drugs - many become addicited, they lose their jobs, families and sometimes their lives. They often must steal from others to support this habit.
To buy and use illegal drugs is self centered, and is detrimental to society as a whole. If you have minimized the impact in your own life, good for you. But most users are not so thoughtful.

The three points you raise very well in that post are:
Addiction: weed is not psysically addictive. That said, people can become addicted to anything. Gambling, masturbating etc. It's all about self control. USE versus ABUSE.

Long Term Side Effects: Particularly with regards to MDMA -it has been commonly available for recreational use just shy of 25 years. I know several people from different backgrounds who have used it on a regular basis (every week to every month, depending) who show no signs of ill effect. Other than that, yes, it will take a while for long term effects to be widely known.

Supporting Crime: As stated, it does not have to be this way. But while it is, the best thing we can do is minimise the impact.

 for keeping it civil so far.

Drive on! :bigthumb:

Much is unknown about THC. However, the intellectual capacity of the stoners I know seems to be diminished.
I agree, in fact sometimes it gets so bad that they swear weed has no negative effect on them... :icon16:

My substances of choice (MDMA aka. Ecstasy and THC aka. weed) are not addicting...

Oz, just about anything can become addicting. To suggest that these substances are not addicting is faintly rediculous. Just about everyone I know who has ever even smoked weed has an ongoing habbit of doing it. Out of curiosity, how often do you smoke it?
I know people who can't even go a day without it - pathetic :disappoin. Of my friends who do smoke regularly, they all are much more fun to be around when they're not smoking (in the case of an upcoming drug test etc.) than they are when they are smoking - because when they're allowed to smoke, all they want to do is smoke - and then they sit around for an hour doing nothing and then they play video games.
I also find it rediculous that many drug users are so absorbed by doing drugs, that doing drugs is all they ever want to talk about. :disappoin

2SB - a few clarifictions. They are not physically addicting (your body won't 'withdraw' if it is without either of them).

I smoke on average twice a week, but can go several months with none and not miss it.

Also, I am aware of what your talking about with substance users that that becomes all they are interested in doing or talking about. I am not one of those people and never will be.

There are two kinds of addiction, physiological and phsycological... and some things can be physcologically addicting though not physically.

i won't lie. i do smoke weed occasionally, but i'm not a major pothead, nor am i the kind of guy who will buy it, but i will become a smoking buddy if need be. i used to be all about the straight edge thing, but then i was thinking; was I doing it because i wanted to? Or was i doing it because it was what people wanted me to do? I'm a college kid, let me check shit out so i don't go around when i'm 40 years old wondering if i experienced anything during my young life. yeah i smoke weed, yeah i drink occasionally, and yes i'm a sexaholic who likes porn, but i'll never ever do any of that other crap, i'm all set with shooting crap into my veins, or snorting death up my nose, i'm just set with that. I don't want to be an eTard either that's just wrong imo. it's just an experimental deal.i'll probably leave it alone and grow out of the whole deal. plus i want my money to go towards my tuition and an iPod...possibly a 240 when i have enough $$$, not a pastime that turns into an endless habit. :2cents:
Good post. I agree with you all the way. There's such a huge stereotype of how people who smoke weed are. I rarely just sit around when I smoke, I usually go out and go shopping or where ever friends are head to. And the majority of smokers don't have meaningless, idiot conversations trying to interpret the number 5. Stereotypes are a bitch. And all of the falacies out there don't help either.

I have my personal values, education and experiences and am more than capable of making an informed decision.
You tell 'em Oz. Exactly why I said stereotypes are a bitch. Everyone has the preconceived notion that people who use drugs abuse them and are complete idiots. Back when I smoked weed daily my second year of college I kept a solid 3.0 average. Some people do have slow reaction times under the influence. My roomate is a complete idiot on it, and the next day kinda slow. But he's the only one I know that is like that. Everyone else you would never know. I've been around my parents and other parents while high and they never knew a thing.

^wow lay off Oz people!!

In my opinion weed should be classed as alcohol and ciggarettes are. But then again, alchohol and ciggarette are resposnisble for so much death's while weed on the other hand is responsible for none! so figure that one out!!

I have friends who are straight no-drugs and friends who need them, at the end of the day its your life. My personal belief is research and moderation can make drugs great and more plausable then earlier thought..

I hate how people generalise marijuana use to teenage punks like bill and ted. I myself work at Nandoes, and my store manager has joints to chill himself down as well as 3 other managers at the store. Hell my store owner has bought weed off people at my work, the store manager is 35 with 2kids and he smokes occasionally!!

dont knock it till youve tried it!!

peace!

Before you knock it... Try it first. So you'll see its a blessing, and its not a curse :D

Good line, good line.

I guess if it comes down to the pot-heads I know personally... None of them are really burnt out. It's mostly the people who go a step-further. Into Cocaine, H, Crack, or Severe Perscription Drug abuse.

Im not against you if you do drugs... Im just against drugs.

(There, thats the line i've been looking for...)

What about those that heal you when sick?
What about those that ease the pain of people with serious problems?

I think you were looking for:

I dont do any drugs or drink.. I dont really not do it for any piticular reasons other then I personaly dont like the "out of it" feeling. Like, not being in complete controll of my mind and body.
As for cig's though.. there is NO point in them... Half my family used to smoke(my moms side) and guess what.. Half my family is 6feet under. My mom is the oldest person that I know on that side of the family and she's only like 44... And saddly, she too smokes.

Thats my only rant anyway.

Also, for some reason I get pissed off when someone calls me straight-edge... As if doing drugs was such a big deal that people like me who chose not to for one reason or another need to be classified/labeled

btw Hyatus, unless you have lived with an amish family and experianced their way of life with an open mind, you above post is abit on the ironic side...
