How do I get the button thingy for the door?

We just bought a 2001 Grand-Am SE (4cylindred). I think we got a good deal for 6999 with 14K miles...... Bought at a local car lot in South Florida.

-- We want to get the remote for the keyless entry but it doesnt exactly seem as easy as I was led to beleive. Of course the dealership could easily put a hole in my depleated wallet.....

It seems that there is an internal and external system that was used in these vehicles. (under the dash or in the trunk?) How can I tell which I have? I didnt see anything in the trunk..... There's lots a crap under the dash

Will I be able to program with Snap-on scanner equipment or is this some propreitary dealership stuff so I get held by the ankles out the window.....

Then, FCC ID: L2C0005T for the under the dash -OR- FCC (iud): KOBLEAR1XT for the trunk model.... Is this correct info for the remote that I need?

I wish I could just buy this thing at Wallmart and program it by simultanisly holding the horn, the volume on the radio and flashing the glovebox light with my big toe.......

Yea I think you have to have a GM Tech scan tool to program the the new remotes, might as well just let the dealer do it as those scantools are pretty expensive for a single time use. You could also get an aftermarket keyless entry system installed.

I have access to many a shop, some with more investment in equipment then others.

I need to know just what kind of favor I need.

Can my buddy at the local just open the program mode with his check engine light scanner or do I need to cash in one of those "High Tech" (blue) chip favors I've accumulated fixin others peoples aeroplanes. Being an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic at the local FBO doesnt necessarily pay much, but I do get comp's.

What is the magnitude of the scanner that I am requiring........ I played with one on the Strap-On truck,,, I didnt know the VIN exactly so I am not sure if I can open the vehicle (BCM- [body control module])to the program mode with just any old scanner.......

The Point is, Just like your local CableTV box....it knows how to do it all..... the trick is to get the car to accept the frequency from the crappy little remote so it will work..... GM has apparently put the KyBosch on just any chump fixin their own car...

I guess thats why their so CHEAP compared to quality European Automobiles!

I'm not sure if you can do it (program additional remotes) with a snap-on scanner or not as I don't have access to one nor do I think I'd ever buy one for DIY use. I'd think though that you could use a snap-on scanner to do it since it can do so many of the things the factory scanners can do that the cheap diy scanners/code readers can't. IMHO I think it's about time more companies or persons make DIY substitutes for factory scanners, there really aren't any in the market and the demand is huge.
