Auto AC issue

does anyone have any idea why the AUTO AC on my 92 SSE goes directly to ECON mode when I press AUTO?

There is a diagnostic mode for the ECC up to 93. Do you want to try that?

My first thought is that in auto mode, the ECC wants to engage the compressor but for some reason (usually low refrigerant) it won't.
