I've been in my friends car ('95 4dr) with an h22a swap in it and went 142mph on a highway. But let me tell you it was no fun when you're going that fast with 4 people in the car and someone cuts infront of you. I was in the passenger seat and I could feel the front brakes give out until he pulled the e-brake right before we hit the lady. Of course I don't know if that really counts seeing as how I wasn't driving and it wasn't my car; and his speedometer was a little off because he had bigger rims than stock.

well, at 110 my civic stops being a car and starts being a plane.
a plane with no propultion, control, or stability.
well, more like a missile :o
so i try to keep it under that. highest sustained speed was 95-105 on the I90 tollway from ohio to chicago... was in a hella hurry. sustained driving at that speed with traffic going 30mph slower sucks :/
when your ride smooths out to caddy soft, and the steering goes to hell, it's time to CAREFULLY slow down!

131 Miles per hour in my civic 1999 SiR.
Me and two other people on the car and some laugage, I was doing around 7000 rpms in 5th gear so it would probably top at 135 or so...not sure.
Wont try the top speed cause I will probably die, I got a girlfriend, brothers and friends. I want to die later.

My car maxes out at around 125. I've only done that a couple of times and it feels like the damn thing is about to fly off the road. Probably the highest speed I've maintained for a long time was 115 mph for about an hour, going north on the New Jersey Turnpike at about 3 am. All the way from the Delaware Memorial Bridge, onto the trucks-and-buses side, and back past the merge, almost to New York. Just 10 mph slower than max speed, and it still handled well enough to maintain it. So somewhere between 115 and 125, the car loses it's freakin' mind.

Yeah, that's pretty crazy...
That's why I don't have a bike. I'd do something like that and run into a friggin guard rail or something and get launched into orbit.
I like airbags, seatbelts, crumple zones, that sort of thing. : )

Street-legal bike speedometers are way off at that high of speeds. If you didn't get radar confirmation on that, I'd say you were only going around 180.. which is still fast as shit.

155mph at VIR in Feb 2002.
This is with 205/50x15" tires so that prolly threw off the speedo ALOT! I think max speed of the 2000 Civic Si is 143mph.

seems to me that stock civics are governed at 180 KM/H which is what? 108 mph?
wheel1856
07-02-2004, 08:46 PM
I wouldn't say stockers are governed at 108, I've had my stock, despite a CAI, '97 DX up to 115. A previously owned 200 GS-R up to 125, and my first honda, a '94 EX coupe up to 130.
'course, the current DX is in the shop due to some clicking in the valve train somewhere....dammit

i believe the governer is around 120-122 but you can go faster than that if you're going down a hill; or get the ECU chipped. But it could also be different from certain years, who knows for sure.

The 97 DX I got goin to 115 on a nice straight on the PA turnpike, flat - believe it or not, for mere mortals the drive from Annapolis, MD to Youngstown, OH is 6 hours, for me, I boast 4 1/2 hours, no tickets...yet. Of course, now that I've said that, next time I go home.....The 94 EX I did on flat road, turns, at about 3 am on a fun little stretch on a road deemed 680, Youngstown "bypass" - in college my fraternity brothers and I would race to Perkins after a party - those of us that were sober that is, and call it the SAE 500, good times.(SAE being sigma alpha epsilon, not society of automotive engineers)
speaking of ohio and fun roads, if you are ever in eastern Ohio, and want about 20 miles of horsepower hard on, route 9 south from Salem to New Carrolton, whoa. Even more fun if you continue route 39 from new carrolton to New Philadelphia...nice long stretches and open view curves.
Safe too, no traffic, worst case scenario you have to slow down to pass an omish buggy...

There was a guy here in Chicago who got nailed about 3 or 4 years ago for doing over 170 on his bike on Lake Shore Drive. He was taken to jail and his bike was temporarily impounded, but after posting bail and paying his fine, he was a free man. The funny part was there was a news crew that filmed him leaving the impound yard, and as he's pulling out of the gate he pops a wheelie and screams off down the street.
But i digress and get back on topic...
Fastest i went in my Civic was just over 110 mph. The fastest i've ever gone was 132 mph in an '89 Cutlass Supreme SL on the highway, very late at night. Luckily no cops were around, or i'd have been in deep shit.

i've gotten to 100 in my lx on a very up and down road, starting at about 60 or so from the top of the last hill. locked the tires when someone pulled out infront of me. suppose it was best that way as the speed limit turned to 35 where they pulled out and there was a cop bout 1/4 mile down the road... i havent even tried toping it out on flat ground yet
p.s. does anyone else absolutely hate when people see you coming fast then pull out infront of you fast, but dont go fast themselves?

Does 4th gear max out the car?
No, it could go faster into fifth. Top of fourth gear checks out to be about 132 MPH, and fifth it could potentially do 172. Don't know if it would do 170 (be it limited by the car or the size of my balls :)) but i'm certain it would do more than 130.

when i had the ol d16 in my car it would not top out in 5th. not enough power to pull with that gear. so i would shift up to 5th from 4th and it would actually begin to slow down. lol

fifth gear is worthless in single cams...its for gas mileage not for power

well most of the time 5th is just for mileage... thats why its the overdrive gear

yeah basically...i was running a d15b with a cx tranny...wow my gears couldnt get any longer if i would dare shift into fifth while i was running it was like the brakes would engage, no power and a lot of noise
