More Problems!?

Hey.. I finally got my turbo back and installed it yesterday.. GOt the .57 trim wheel.. Everything went great, heli-coiled the exhaust.. Nice and quiet now... Flushed the cooling system and added water + redline WaterWetter.. and about 15% long life engine coolant.. The car seems to be running ok.. Kinda sluggish.. But it smokes A LoT..It smokes under throttle and smokes A LoT under boost.. Its kindof a grey smoke.. not blue or white.. And it smells funny.. Also, My friend said there was a lot of fluid coming out of my exhaust pipe.. Enough to splash up on his windshield.. The engine oil level isnt dropping at all.. and its consistantly clean.. Any ideas what the problems could be??!?

I also havent noticed any performance gains whatsoever after the installation of the rebuilt turbo

some more info:
About 8000kms on rebuilt engine (unsure of mechanics ability) and
75kms on rebuilt turbo

Car sat for about a month and a half before I got all the parts

Using Penzoil 10W30 non synthetic.. Will be switching over to Esso Ultra 5W30 non synthetic soon

Everything on the car is completly stock except the plug wires and now the turbo

sorry for the long post! car is very very frustrating and has been nothing but problems

if it's a grey smoke then you are running rich which could be why you haven't noticed any performance gain in the rebuilt turbo... what boost are you running, are you running bigger injectors? fuel pump? fuel pressure regulator?
take your car to a dyno and get the fuel mixtures checked.... too much fuel can cause the engine to run quite sluggish
now the fluid out the exhaust pipe, that's a worry... when does this happen?
have you checked your coolant levels, are they going down at all?

hope this can help :)

thought black smoke was running rich? check the condition of your spark plugs...check that fluid coming out of your exhaust, I can't imagine it being anything but waster, either from a lot of condensation or a BHG =(

Well the coolant and oil levels are still steady 400km's after the turbo install... So ive come to the conclusion that the car is running incredably rich.. The plugs are old and could use a changing.. Im gonna do a tune up tomorrow.. Other than that, is there any way to lean out the mixture a bit with out expensive A/F controllers, or Dyno's?? (closest dyno to me is about 7 hrs away).. And without the risk of running Too lean?

Oh, and no everything on the car is completly stock except for the turbo compressor wheel (57.1)

The injectors, pump, etc are all stock.. It hasnt come near full boost since I put the new turbo in.. It peaks at about 250mmhg's.. Which i think is about 5psi

got some pics of the car smoking.. first one is idle, second one is on deceleration from about 3000rpm (in park)

Your sure the coolant level is the same? That looks 100% like coolant smoke IMO, but if you say it smells like gas then it could be, usually running rich will make a very black could, that's almost white. You don't have any bubbling/waterfall behind the dash? Could possably be the turbo seals, can you find another ct-26 or the old one to swap on to see if that corrects it?

im just about positive it is coolant.. it smells like boiling water.. But I cant see my coolant going down in the overflow.. ant the rad is always full..
I just got the turbo rebuilt too, they must have screwed up..

Anyway, it was suggested to me to pressure test the coolant system, then if it was down, cap off the turbo coolant lines and test it again.. Is this a good idea???

Yes, exactly how I would have done it. Hopefully it's not BHG and it is the turbo, the turbo is much easier to swap than the HG as you know.

Ok so I brought my car into DSG (rebuilt my turbo) so they could find out what was wrong with the car..
She phoned me today and said that it was indeed the Turbo thats causing the problems..
What she also said was
"we're going to pull the turbo out, and find out whats wrong.. If its something we did, its our bill, if not, its your bill"

They charge $250 to take out the turbo $350 to rebuild and $250 to put it back in.. Thats a lot of money.. But what I need to know is, could there have been anything I did installing the turbo that would cause it to eat coolant or oil?? Or is it for sure the fault of the turbo rebuilder??

I dont want them to try blame it on me and charge me..Which is a large possibility because otherwise that would be a lot of work they arent getting paid for

Well, DSG got back to me today.. Turns out it was their mistake and they were very honest about it and are going to re-rebuild my turbo for me and install it free.. It turns out, they used the wrong bearings?? Which is a good thing because now I know why the turbo was lagging so much and the car was so slow.. Anyways, Problem solved.. For now...Hopefully i get her back soon

thanx to all who replied

Nice work, glad to see you didn't have to pay that huge bill also. Happy Boosting!
