I have a 1990 Astro LT AWD with 116k miles. I bought it with 90k miles in December 1999 for $5,000. In the 26k miles I've driven it I've experienced the following:
Air conditioning fan blower disintegrated - puncturing the shroud.
Replaced 1 motor mount.
Replaced noisy front driveshaft (had new one made) after replacing left front axels twice thinking the noise was coming from that. $400-500.
Replaced PS/PB pump. $300-400.
Replaced front differential (tooth broke off ring-gear and broke housing). $900+.
Replaced serpentine belt tension pulley.
Rebuilt transmission. $900+
Replaced both motor mounts.
Still needs rear-main seal replaced.
Yes, it has been a bit expensive. But its a great ride and the exterior and interior are in pretty good shape. It is very sure-footed in the ice and snow. It gets up and down our Tennessee gravel-mountain driveway (1.5 miles) in the winter (also a must in the summer). Would I buy a new one? I've come close, but even with a GM Family discount and rebates its a bit pricey for me. Like all cars with a few miles, the Astro has its share of maintenance issues. Most irritating are some cheap design issues with things like switches, door panels, etc.
I just purchased a new Sonoma crewcab 4x4 and my wife loves it! I will continue to drive my Astro and be satisfied.
